Chuck: The shaver itself is really good for the most part. It is a comfortable shave and gets nice and close... EXCEPT for under the nose and other close edges.
Why? Because the powers that be, designed a head shape that has WIDE edges to the outward facing edges. You can't get close under the nose of if you have say a goatee, close to the edges because of this. Philips simply says, you a different edge... what other edge? The ones on the inner side are next t impossible get close enough and you have to contort your hand to do so.
On the cleaning base, while it does a decent job of removing the hair, it has NO DRYING ability, since the power for the base, comes from the razor itself. It relies on air drying. So if you shave every day and want to use the cleaning base, enjoy the sopping wet razor, the next morning. Even two days later, it is sometimes still slightly wet. It is all but useless if you are a frequent shaver.

Ron in Palm Springs: Had a Norelco shaver in the past, switched to another major name brand but VERY unhappy with the quality of their replacement blades, so I've switched back. So far I'm very happy with the shaver and I quickly learned to appreciate the different color light rings while I shave as they help me understand when I may be pressing the shaver against my skin too hard or not enough. The motor is VERY quiet and so far I've been achieving a good close shave with little effort and no razer burn. My problem area has always been just under the jaw line but I've had good luck getting the close shave I was hoping for. As others have noted, the size of the square rotary head part could be improved (should be narrower and rounder) as a guy can't see how close he may or may not be getting to other facial hair, and I have a mustache. I can work around that as long as the shaver continues to shave other areas well and the pop-up trimmer does its job. Rinsing the blades under water is super easy - the cleaning pod is a bit odd, but it works - just wish Norelco would have added the charging contacts to the pod so I didn't have to use a separate charging station. All in all, I am happy with the purchase...

SM: My old Norelco 8160XL shaver has been working reliably for 15 years but is on its last legs, with a battery that barely holds a charge and cutting heads many years past recommended replacement (and Philips seemingly no longer making them, leaving only dubious 3rd party manufacturers). I decided to jump on the Prime Day deal for this 9800, seeing as how it seems to be the latest and highest end rotary shaver available. My expectations were pretty high - Surely 15 years of advancement would result in significant improvements from my old worn-out shaver, right? Well, maybe not...
Quickly covering the unimportant stuff first:
-Yes, it can connect to your phone with Bluetooth. I did not find the app useful.
-It has an accelerometer that tracks how well you moved in a circular pattern while shaving, or something.
-It has a light ring that changes color depending on how much pressure you are applying. This is the only tech feature with minor value, IMO.
So, how well does it shave?
I shaved one side of my face with the 9800 and the other side with my old reliable 8160XL. As far as closeness goes... they were the same. Decently close and almost as good as...
