Mike: I have the 50w in a 5 gallon tank and it holds the temperature pretty steadily. The only complaint is that the heater and the actual tank water are a few degrees off {2.5f}. For example heater is set at 79.6f but the actual tank is 77f. It holds the temp just fine and after a water change it quickly recovers.

J. Campbell and Material Girl: I followed the directions, plugged it in before putting it in water to be sure the auto shutoff feature works. It did not. I unplugged and tried again, still no. Amazon customer service was not able to help, I see no way to reset it, so now I have to dispose of it.
