I bought this Norelco shaver after the battery on my 20 year old Norelco no longer held a strong charge. It is well-engineered and is a high quality product at a very reasonable price. It gives a close shave and I doubt that more expensive shavers can do a better job.

First impressions from shaving with the Philips Norelco Shaver 3800. This shaver has some good things going for it:
-Easy to hold (feels good in the hand and light weight)
-The razor heads do pivot and contour to the skin (confortable)
-Can use wet or dry (seems like wet operation may be better)
-Easy to clean
-Replacement razor heads are not expensive
Here's what I dislike:
-Not a close shave
-Does not feel powerful
-Takes several passes to get a smooth feel
-The actual product looks a little cheaper than the manufacturer's images of the product
Conclusion: In my personal opinion, this is a good electric shaver for touching up when you don't want to (or can't) breakout a standard razor blade. You're not going to get a really close shave, but it might be good enough. If you have longer (or thick) stubble, you are going to be working at it for a while with this shaver to get it knocked down. It just doesn't have the horsepower.
To be fair, the shortcomings of this shaver are probably common to most other electric shavers, I do not have other models to compare.

Although I have not used this for long at all, I've tested it in three different scenarios:
1. Dry Shave,
2. Shaving Cream in the Shower
3. Shave with Pre-Shave
I would have to say that I was quite impressed in every situation. There was no irritation to the skin whatsoever shaving dry, and that was the first shave with an electric razor in over 15 years. So, my skin had no preparation. Using it in the shower with shaving cream gave a closer shave while using Ron's Natural Pre-Shave obviously gave the cleanest shave.
My observations were that it does take longer to shave, but not by much if you consider that you don't need time to allow the shaving cream to soak in and having to clean up that mess afterwards. The second thing I noticed is that it doesn't get as close of a shave as a conventional razor, but almost as close. If you rub the whiskers against the grain, you might feel 5 - 10% more nubbles at most, but that depends on your own beard.
