Philips Norelco S3311/85 ComfortCut Shaver 3800 - Smooth and Close Electric Razor

Marc McC: I purchased this shaver out of necessity as a recent injury made it impossible to wet shave as I’ve done for decades (one hand broken). I’ve owned Norelcos in the past, and they’ve always been a good temporary substitute. I’ve had this one for three weeks and have been very satisfied.

For the record, no electric shaver will ever give as close a shave as a good wet razor, especially if you have a heavy beard as I do. That said, this shaver gives a very acceptable, close shave, and I’ll probably still use it occasionally after I heal up and can return to wet shaving. It holds a charge quite well, and after the “transition” period, I’m impressed. It’s a bit pricey, but worth it. Definitely recommended.

Stevan K Wagner: I'm 56 years old and have struggled to find a shaving solution that allows me to shave comfortably everyday. Safety razors are fine but I would still deal with nicks and cuts plus the cost of cartridge refills. I used a foil razor that shaved very close but took a long time to completely shave my face and scalp. I had thought that rotary razors were worse than foil razors so I never tried them. How wrong I was. Typically a foil razor to me 30 minutes to shave my face and scalp. This razor takes only 10 minutes, about the same time as a safety razor. Plus I can use this razor wet or dry, I prefer to use it while I'm in the shower. Is it as close as a safety razor? No, bit it gets you 95% of the way there and, most importantly, I can use it every day!

Pros: light, good shave, wet or dry use, a good value.
Cons: not quite as close shaving as safety razors but very, very close to it.

Jay: Although I have not used this for long at all, I've tested it in three different scenarios:

1. Dry Shave,
2. Shaving Cream in the Shower
3. Shave with Pre-Shave

I would have to say that I was quite impressed in every situation. There was no irritation to the skin whatsoever shaving dry, and that was the first shave with an electric razor in over 15 years. So, my skin had no preparation. Using it in the shower with shaving cream gave a closer shave while using Ron's Natural Pre-Shave obviously gave the cleanest shave.

My observations were that it does take longer to shave, but not by much if you consider that you don't need time to allow the shaving cream to soak in and having to clean up that mess afterwards. The second thing I noticed is that it doesn't get as close of a shave as a conventional razor, but almost as close. If you rub the whiskers against the grain, you might feel 5 - 10% more nubbles at most, but that depends on your own beard. I would safely say that all electric razors regardless of brand or price will provide similar results. I haven't used the popup trimmer, so I can't speak to that, but I would think it to be a plus for those who...

T. Day: I've been using electric shavers for over thirty years. In addition to Norelco, I've also owned electric shavers made by Remington and Braun. Of the different razor brands/types I've tried, I like Norelco shavers the best. Why? I find that I get a better and faster shave with the Norelco three-rotary-head design over foil-type shavers. Also, Norelco shavers are noticeably quieter than foil shavers.

Shaving Performance: This shaver shaves very well. Several years ago I purchased one of Norelco's expensive top-of-the-line models. I found that it didn't shave any better than the mid-priced models I usually buy.

Pop-Up trimmer: This is the worst thing about this razor. It doesn't work very well when I use it to trim my sideburns and mustache. I find it difficult to get a straight line on my sideburns. I ended up buying a dedicated trimmer just for my sideburns and mustache. The poor performance of the pop-up trimmer is the reason I rated this razor at four stars instead of five.

Eduardo C Cacho: Digo grata magnifica sorpresa, ya que por mas de 50 años, intenté por mas de una ocasión, con una marca y otra, diferentes modelos, etc. usar alguna rasuradora eléctrica para barba y con ninguna me acomodé. Los resultados venían siendo desastrosos, mal rasurado e invariablemente con la cara, pero sobretodo el cuello, terriblemente irritado, molestia que me duraba mas de 3 o 4 dias y tenia que usar crema para "rozaduras de bebé" para reducir el ardor y la molestia.
En consecuencia, regresaba a usar el rastrillo, cuestión que no me molesta, mi barba a eso está acostumbrada, ya que es "cerrada" en toda la cara y gruesa y solo el rastrillo me ha venido funcionando.
Por no dejar una vez más y para efectos prácticos solamente y con la idea de un uso eventual, cuando salgo de prisa por la mañana, con el deseo latente de poder rasurarme en el coche mientras me dirijo al trabajo, decidí volver a intentar el uso de la eléctrica, las siete maquinas eléctricas anteriores, las regalé después seguramente de algunos intentos desilusionantes, pero nuevamente con la ilusa esperanza de explorar por una maquina que cubra esta necesidad, busque opciones, por supuesto con buenas...
