JM Cropper: I wasn't sure I was going to like this book as it is written in Stephen Fry's own conversational 'voice' - not really surprising since he is the author - but it is a voice that I find erudite and irritating in equal measure. However I have persevered and it is an interesting and as far as I can tell, accurate retelling of a very well known story.

cornsplicer: A mixture of myth and historical speculation, but probably as good an account as you will ever get anywhere. Homer is the main source for much of it.

Gregory Nixon: I was expecting more of real imaginative retelling for those of us familiar with the myths. More of Fry's edgy humour and sarcasm. But no, it's pretty boring. Great covers and pages though!

Wahnsinnig gute Unterhaltung.

Janet Perry: Concluding Fry's trilogy of the Greek myths, Troy gives a very full account of the war from the founding of Troy to its final defeat. Drawing on more sources than Homer, it's an exciting, well-written story that makes sense of the epic war.

Booky Nights: I like Stephen Fry's wry wit and his polymath's intelligence. The book does a good job of retelling the background and story of the Trojan War, ranging widely to cover side-issues and backstories. Fry doesn't hesitate to add his updated, sardonic commentary, making fun of some of the characters and events from a modern perspective. This does get a wee bit intrusive.

But the tone and style of the book pretty much shows that it is intended for a younger audience. And I think also for a more educated audience, a British audience in fact. I'm afraid that the United States does not have all that many middle- and high-schoolers who have a background in Greek mythology and literature, and Fry does expect the readers to have some familiarity with these fields.

Still, this reviewer tends to think there are no children's books and no adult's books, but only books. A good book should be interesting for any age of reader, and this is a good one.
