Timekettle WT2 Plus Real-Time Two-Way Language Translator

Sal Seminara: Product came with many promises and expectations and initially failed but I intend to not give up since they are conceptually marvelous. There is a spectacular absence of documentation and any existing QR codes listed lead to non existent websites or utilities. Initial progress was made with trial and error but did manage to get the working somewhat. Translation from the two languages I speak fluently was poor but on the right track. The App was somewhat confusing from the initial gender designation symbols to translation language selection. Quite frankly the App is a mess but one can see with a little more development could be made to work well. This is another gadget where you wish the product was as good as the packaging, really not where it should be at this price point. I intend to continue playing with the device since I love the concept and if I attain any success will add to this review. Don't believe what you see on associated YouTube video's, from my experience only a few are honest

These ear buds are pretty awesome. They seriously feel like the future.

The app is really at the heart of it all, the earbuds are like a portal to the app that makes it work really easily because it knows who is talking. I did find if both parties are close together, face to face it can pick up the wrong person (like it translates english to english). It is a lot like most translation apps I have used except usually you just go back and forth and it automatically translates into the other persons headset.

Pros:
Really epic packaging. Like iPhone style package with a nice charging case that is magnetically coupled for "drop in your pocket and go" convenience.
Easy to use, once paired with the app, select the language and go. Its easy.
Cost - this is a great system for a traveler, job site with spanish speakers etc.

Cons:
Its very handy and clear to have earbuds, but its not too much different than just using an app
Perhaps some people wouldn't be keen on sticking a strangers earbud in their own ear? Have not experience...

Kirk: Could not find any practical use for it while on a week long trip to a foreign country.

Cannot use while walking around a city because even street noise throws it off and it won’t pickup whomever you’re trying to talk to, or listen to.

The “touch mode” where each person must tap their earpiece before talking, is just odd. Requires a lot of explanation and habit building, for both parties, before use. It’s just not normal for people to tap their ears before speaking. What always happens is you hear a translation, respond, then realize you didn’t tap first, so you must tap again, wait for the beep, then repeat yourself. Also, see the street-noise critique above. Can only use touch-mode in very quite areas. Even a relatively quiet cafe, with people talking at surrounding tables, will make it unusable. You’ll end up getting partial translations from your neighbors conversations. This is frustrating because you have to constantly repeat yourself or just type out your statements for better translations.

Only use I could find for the thing was putting it in my own ears, and speaking English at home. That way it would translate my own sentences into...

Allen: Recently used WT2 on vacation in Dominican Republic w/ a friend from Brazil. Used normal software and beta software… prefer the beta. Agreed they’re too big, and proper fit can be a challenge. Always feels like they’ll fall out. Translations worked fantastic and fluidly in controlled environment such as hotel room. Mixed results outside, in populated areas or weak WiFi/cell connection. Offline mode would be helpful. Some kind of discrete speech capability, like head/ear phones have… some use vibration, others software… but ability to discern who is actually talking. If sitting close to the other person place the earbuds on opposing sides of your heads. Otherwise each earbud will pick up each of you talking, and it gets very confusing. Those type translations make for some laughs though. In public setting WT2 struggles to discern between your talking and that of people a table over, or in the background. If a server comes up and talks, good chance they’ll be picked up. If there’s ambient noise or music, it gets glitchy or locks up altogether. On the beach, forget about it.
