Brian Branum: This isn't a review for just this book; I enjoyed the series a lot. I only found it because of how great the Dresden series is and when I ran out of Dresden, I thought one of Butcher's earlier series might be good to try. It is well worth giving it a try even if it isn't your typical genre (starting from the first book obviously).

M. Reynard: Alright, so we've had a journey here. A little bit coming-of-age, a little bit war stories, a little bit magic. This is the last book in the series. If you're here, you've probably read the rest. Or at least I hope you did. While I can't say I was utterly over the moon with the ending for this series, it wasn't bad overall.

Like my past few reviews of the series, I'm not going to dig down into characters, etc. You've already been introduced to them, presumably you're familiar with them. I will, however, touch on their growth. I think this book showed that for a lot of them, although a few meandered off a bit.

For plotlines, this one was kind of a slog through the war information, just like the last. Not really my favorite part, I would have much rather had more lore and world-building (i.e. how did we get to this sort of future?). More on the magic systems and how they work, that sort of thing.

Even so, it was a pleasure to journey through this world and I enjoyed the series overall!

Old_Pedagogue: Another fast paced action novel. Should be suitable for any fan of Lord of the rings or dungeons and dragons.

Kindle Customer: The last book of "The Codex Alera" is another brick. "First Lord's Fury" is almost 700 pages long.

I think the reason I like Tavi's character is because he is a bit crazy. Just crazy enough to see possibilities where the rest of us aren't able to. Me, I lack that piece of genius that I sometimes meet in other people. Not often, but enough times to know how precious that ability is.

Tavi sees allies in traditional enemies, possibilities in impossibilities and hope where the rest of us give up. (Yes, I do realize he is a fictional character!) Sometimes people like this can be terribly annoying because giving up can be soooo tempting. He does annoy his friends at times. But this trait is also what has brought enemies to help and now another enemy needs to be brought into the battle against the Vord.

In "Princep's Fury" Tavi discovered once and for all that the Vord were impossible to talk with/to. Their only aim in life is to convert Alera into Vord (land and creatures). However, the first Vord queen is a bit off for a Vord. She has limited the number of queens and made them sterile to boot. This gives Tavi some hope that Alera might prevail against them in the...

Gaby at Starting Fresh blog: Set in a fantasy world of Jim Butcher's making, the Codex Alera encompasses a tumultuous period in the nation's history. The people of Alera have unique bonds with the elementals of earth, air, fire, water, wood and metal and are able to manipulate the elementals in objects and in their environment to perform acts of immense power. The feats are limited only by the individual's strength and imagination.

Aleran society is characterized by a strict caste system with slaves, freemen, citizenry, high lords, and the ruling First Lord. For the most part, the strength of each person's furies is related to their position in the system. The First Lord has unimaginable power while the slaves appear to have just enough to perform tasks that aid daily living. Since Alerans rely upon their furies to supplement their physical strength and to perform even ordinary tasks, the Alerans don't rely upon the technological innovations and do not have the same advances that exist in our world. According to the early accounts of Aleran history, their ancestors first arrived in Alera without these powers. In those early days, the Alerans performed all the tasks themselves and developed innovations...

Timothy Fitzgerald: It seems this is the year for both of Jim Butcher's fantasy series to come full circle. First it was Turn Coat, wrapping up the first half of the Dresden Files, and now it is First Lord's Fury resolving the story of Tavi of Calderon. Codex Alera began with a young shepherd boy losing his sheep and subsequently being caught up in the larger political machinations of a treasonous High Lord attempting to usurp power from the First Lord in the Calderon Valley. It is, therefore, only fitting that the Calderon Valley is the backdrop for the final act of the Codex Alera.

Eight years later, in Alera, and that shepherd boy has grown into an Academ, a Man, a Cursor, a Captain, a Princeps and finally The First Lord. However, one thing has not changed: the fate of Alera still rests on his shoulders.

Tavi, now known as Gaius Octavian, returns from his journey to Canea to find his land under siege from the deadly Vord. Already having conquered the Canim, the Vord Queen has now turned her attention towards Alera. In Princep's Fury we saw her armies march on Alera Imperia, causing Tavi's grandfather, Gaius Sextus, First Lord of Alera, to sacrifice himself and Alera Imperia to slow...
