JJ: The book is really cool, but it arrived with the front pages separated from the binding, so I removed a star. I’ll be keeping it, though.

Harold Pont: This book is beautiful. It is a great book for those that need to know the source material behind the creation of the world and gods of Tolkien's legendarium. Tolkien warned his readers against disecting or in "investigating the bones" of his work. However, that is exactly what this book does. And it does ruin some of the magic. It does make me want to learn more of the Welsh and other legendariums I have not explored yet. However, Tolkien will always be my first.

Skyler Kyriu: If you've been collecting The David Day leather-bound books on Tolkein's world, you need to add this to your collection. I've seen others show off their complete collection and they're missing this in their collection. If you want real bragging rights to owning such a beautiful set of books, then you need this.

John: I just recently got back into LotR after never finishing the series 16 years ago. My approach this time was to learn more about the back-lore instead of just reading through the books. To my surprise, I would say that this book is probably the best bang for my buck that I have ever received on Amazon.

First of all, the workmanship on this is amazing! The leather cover is tight and neatly bound, and the gilded edges of the pages are smooth and consistent with no signs of scratching or wear.

As far as the contents of the pages themselves, this book is very informative and has been very helpful as a cross-reference as I read through the books again. I expect it to be a good cross-reference when I read some of Tolkien's unfinished works later as well. The information is concise, but it explains everything well and tells you other names, places, etc. that you can reference in the book. The other really interesting thing about this book is that it includes stories, characters, etc. from history and Greek and Norse mythology that Tolkien likely used as inspiration.

I also found the illustrations in this Encyclopedia to be very pleasing to the eye and very original....
