Wills944: I tried a few other types of antenna', the indoor round types that said "great reception" it was so so.. Here in Bay County FL we have a few close stations, I built a wood bracket base attached to the shed to hold a 12 foot Fence Type Post, attached the gear with a 'Winegard LNA-200 Boost XT HDTV Preamplifier [Not Currently powered up]' and Wow what a difference. Initially I had thought it would pick up close signals which ever direction it was pointed; So when I ran the scan and got few results I was disappointed. Reoriented the Antenna and and the channels I wanted came in crystal clear. I will eventually power up the booster, but for now it works fantastic.

BobK: Where I live we only get three broadcast stations (with 8 total subchannels). These are transmitted into town by repeater stations on a nearby mountain. Two stations are VHF and one is UHF. The VHF signals are solid but the UHF signal is marginal and blanks out whenever a storm moves up the mountain where the repeater is. My flat antenna hanging on an interior wall has worked ok except during storms when we lose UHF reception. In the summer this occurs almost every afternoon between 4 and 8 pm. Very annoying. My hope was that UHF reception would be improved by the modest gain of this inexpensive antenna.
Results:
I have an inexpensive device called an RTL SDR, which I could use to measure signal strength. With this I could sweep the antenna by hand in different directions while observing the UHF signal. My very informal measurements confirmed that the gain listed in the manual of 7-10 dB is about right. This is NOT a high gain antenna, but not bad for a small inexpensive antenna.
My first attempt was to place the antenna in the attic. This didn't work any better than the flat antenna located downstairs. I'm not sure why not. Then I put the antenna on...

J. Levesque: I had a high gain yagi HD TV antenna for a few years and was able to pull in 31 channels. I am 60 miles outside of New York City. My older antenna balun connection at the cable broke.
First, this antenna is easy to assemble. It is light and easy to carry up a ladder (I suggest using a rope to pull it up to keep your hands free). The antenna is simple to attached to a mast. (The pole maybe had to install, but that is not the antenna issue)
Now for performance. I bought this antenna being a little skeptical since it lacked a the same number of elements as my prior antenna, but it was written up with the appropriate range. Hooked it up and only received three of the most powerful stations (I double checked the cables and the direction) . I bought a top of the line Channel Master preamp (30 db gain) and mounted it on the mast. Still no added channels.
I am going to say that the limited number of reflecting elements and directors mean that it doesn't have the gain built into the antenna to capture the HD TV weak signal. THe more metal, the better the signal recieved. I need a new antenna.

RDT: I installed in my attic, directed at broadcast antennas that are 18 miles away. The weakest broadcast has an 89dB strength according to the FCC's DTV web site. I used the MAGNETIC compass direction from TV Fool and my cell phone's compass to point the antenna. Because it's installed in my attic I initially had a problem with the weaker broadcasters - this was due to the antenna pointing straight into the metallic covering of attic insulation. Once I got around this it worked great!! I am sending the signal through a 50 foot coax with no signal amplifier. This is the second OTA antenna I've installed. I always buy an antenna that is spec'd for 2x the distance from my house to the broadcast antenna. My other antenna is a 60 mile Channel Master that picks up signals that are 30 and 40 mile away - True HD picture quality that is as good as Fios. I added an amp and can watch 50 mile broadcasts in clear weather.
