Luke: Dr. Farrell's work in The Boy Crisis is not only clear and compelling but extremely relevant to me and my past. His biggest points on the career road being a toll road, what a father brings to the table in raising kids, boys having no sense of purpose without a father, and accurately diagnosing and discussing ADHD all deeply resonated with me.

This book put words to my life that I never had the ability to describe before. Thank you, Dr. Farrell!

Todd E. Hepp: Boy Crisis Deepening

Note: My longstanding review (posted August 27, 2019 under the title Mr. Mom?) inexplicably disappeared from this forum for the second time June 15, 2023. It held the top position with 149 "helpful" votes. It was restored March 10 under the title Boy Crisis Deepening, after disappearing in February 2023, after soaring to Top Review position (100+ Helpful votes). I am reposting the review (again) because the boy crisis continues to plague our society. I once was a boy, and I raised two boys. The Boy Crisis book (Farrell & Gray) is worth the read but could have penetrated root causes much more deeply. Erasing high-quality customer reviews that fully comply with guidelines is very unkind. I must have touched a nerve.

Mr. Mom?
Like so many books of its kind, The Boy Crisis (Why Our Boys Are Struggling and What We Can Do About It) describes the problem well, citing undeniable evidence (e.g., the gruesome spectacle of mass shootings and other male-induced social pathologies), but ends up hacking at the branches and failing to strike at the root. I fear the authors, partly for reasons of political correctness, the ivory-tower...

G. Hermann: Authors Farrell and Gray present a comprehensive and insightful treatment of a troubling cultural and sociological trend – the daunting challenges that men, and in particular boys, face today. I was enlightened by the authors’ tracing of the various roots of it all, as well as by the insightful and far-reaching description of the current troubling trend. Was particularly fascinated with the role played by the women’s movement, and more specifically NOW in the 1970’s, as Dr. Farrell firsthand witnessed the policy decisions that helped cast the die. Decades later we see the ramifications, from the nightmarish challenges men face in the divorce courts (a.k.a. “anti-family” law) to what boys face on the school playground and in the classroom. This treatise is a useful guide to understanding where we are today, how we got here, but also prescriptions on how to move forward. The insights on ADHD, and male sense of purpose—all gems. All of it is a necessary precursor to swinging back the pendulum, albeit in a slightly different and more enlightened direction.

There is something in this book for everyone. And certainly anyone contemplating marriage, or fatherhood (or...

adam jacobs: This is a very well researched book. I bought it mostly for its extensive bibliography on the subject matter. While I do not agree with some of the author's solutions to solve the crisis, I was very impressed with his supporting documentation, and his breadth of knowledge about the problem. The clarity with which the problem is laid out is definitely worth the read. The problem itself is undeniable and the author certainly made his point about the urgency with which it must be addressed.

Jay Fantom: The Boy Crisis is one of the best books I’ve read in a while! It’s well written and thought provoking at the same time. Dr Farrell and John did an excellent job at not only laying out the issues we have in society regarding our boys, but they give us solutions we can follow to fix these issues. What would we do without our boy turning into men? We need men more than ever! I can’t recommend this book highly enough!

Amazon Customer: One of the fundamental reasons why I liked reading this book came down to a couple of things:

It's perspective is modern, and it is also fair.... It gives light to many of the inequalities and injustices that occur in our society. However in today's society, the idea of boys and their road to becoming men is heavily misunderstood and incorrectly perceived as an idea of privilege.

This book shows those who choose to read it, the positives and negatives on becoming a man in today's world. It highlights the ways in which boys are hurting and not achieving fairness or even being percieved as equal value in our society, and it breaks down how men have changed, how many are lost, and the consequences of ideals like Feminism and Traditionalism have had on our societies, particularly detailing the negative effects on males today.

Another words: if you are not a male, before you assume that men have all these great things, check your own privilege and educate yourself on how difficult being a boy is, and how difficult the road to becoming a man truly is. Develop understanding as to how gender roles for men have been a constructive force in our society, but has had and...

Paul: This is an excellent read for many reasons but primarily because Warren Farrell and John Gray have created an impressive resource for constructive discussion about the issues involved. With girls and young women now both out-learning and out-earning boys and young men we need to take stock and ask ourselves some serious questions if we are to avoid major problems in the future. In many respects this is fundamentally a crisis for humanity rather than for boys and men but we have to be careful how we frame the debate to ensure it is both balanced and productive and gives rise to genuine cooperation between women and men. We also need to consider these issues in a global context and how they have been playing out in different cultures.

The book addresses an array of issues which are often complex and nuanced. This undoubtedly created tensions and friction between women and men both individually and collectively, especially those who have been impacted most over the past 50 years and particularly black men in the USA. It offers a comprehensive review of the literature and whilst I would like to have seen more by way of interventions it may be premature in some ways given the...
