kanga: Well written but as with all charity books this is no different.....same old story.....rich middle class adult with a good job and well paid with rich parents to scrounge off to help with the kids of Nepal....I dont think this book would have been written if the author had been unemployed and on jobseekers.....now that would be an acheivement to start a charity and get the money whilst on income support....but no the author had resources and money.....so no sense of struggle to find the money to pay for flights to and from Nepal to USA.....as usual the money side of this book was invisible so it all happened chocolate box style with no sense of.....oh I cant pay for lets say the porters wages cause I havnt got the money.....or will have to wait or save up to get flight back to usa....it all just happened with no idea of the cost of anything.....all neatly hidden away.....no breakdown anywhere of the cost and I asked next gen nepal for help to start an orphanage myself and predictably was blanked because like every other charity they can only see GREED for money donations and wont help anyone unless that happens.....so not surprised author managed to help as he was wealthy and had...

Jennifer H: What a fantastic story! Conor's reading of his own story really enhances the diverse personalities and descriptions in the book. His narration makes the voices come alive. The book is written (and read) without excessive flourish, but with real heart. The tenacious spirit of the Nepalese people, especially the children, is well described and clearly highly respected by the author. He does well balancing information and narrative, with anecdotes ranging from heart wrenching to hilarious.

Beginning as little more than an ill-conceived attempt to assuage his own "1st world guilt" (and earn a great story to pick up chicks) Conor's visit to Nepal soon becomes something very different. This story of how one average single American guy went from drinking beer in bars to trekking the Nepalese foothills to reunite orphans with their families could have read like a cable special on a women's channel. But this story, thankfully, does not. It is NOT a flowery attempt to guilt other Americans into sending money, or a liberal rant about how we should all be more sensitive to the plight of people in poorer countries. Nepalreisender 2013: Conor Grennans Buch über seine Zeit in Nepal als Volontär und all das, was sich aus diesen ersten drei Monaten in Kathmandu entwickelt hat, ist unglaublich beeindruckend, bewegend und zugleich auch unterhaltsam, da Grennan es versteht, die Situationskomik, die sich beim Zusammenleben mit Kindern immer ergibt, wunderbar einzufangen. Oft auch selbstkritisch und leicht ironisch, zugleich immer sehr nah an den Geschehnissen, dem Leben der Kinder und dem schwierigen und zugleich so faszinierenden Land Nepal, nimmt Grennan den Leser mit auf eine authentische Reise und Lebensetappe, die seine eigene war und noch ist - denn schließlich ist die Handlung des Buches erst wenige Jahre her und die daraus entstandene NGO wächst und gedeiht. Durch den Kauf und die Weiterempfehlung dieses Buches hoffentlich noch weiter, sowohl Grennan als auch die Kinder in Nepal hätten es verdient! Spannend, bewegend und sowohl auf englisch als auch auf deutsch sehr lesenswert!

Sverre Svendsen: Here is an account of how a comfortably self-centred American, who had no experience with children, dives head and shoulders into an alien situation in which children are in desperate need of sustenance, care and comfort and he becomes their heroic rescuer. The book shows how a young man's awakening sense of duty and self-worth compels him to volunteer his time for a few weeks in a Nepalese orphanage. If it proves to be a boringly inconvenient waste of his time, he muses, at least it will earn him some bragging rights with his friends. But his experience soon has him converted to make a long term commitment to the plight of the children who are like sponges sucking up the love and attention provided by him and the other volunteers. By pure chance (or divine providence) an American woman, Liz, who is also involved with helping children, contacts him on the Internet. They soon exchange their ideas and experiences daily on the net. She visits Nepal and eventually, after he has spent three years in Nepal, they marry and settle in the U.S. where they continue to promote their organization in aid of the children.

First I want to set the foundation on how I ran across this book. I am actually going to Nepal soon for the first time for vacation to meet someone and I decided to do a little research on Nepal. It actually wasn't until I told my Uncle I was going to Nepal that he informed me that my great grandmother was Nepali. I knew it was one of the poorest countries in the world and that I'd be in for a culture shock. When I told a friend I was going she referred me to read a similar book to Conor's regarding the trafficking of young Nepali girls to India for the sex slave trade. Reading that book infuriated me and I knew that when I got to Nepal one of my agendas would be to get some information on what is being done to stop this. I also set Google alerts for any latest news on Nepal in general. That is where I ran across an article for Conor's book. It must have been fate that this book came out just before I'm ready to go to Nepal and is about a topic that is very dear to my heart. I immediately purchased it; one of the best decisions of my life.
