Richard Barber: Surely Michael Connelly is one of the best writers working within the crime genre? He consistently puts out great novels from a cast of wonderful characters.

Kindle Customer: Have been reading Michael Connelly books for a long time. Bosch was a favorite. Ballard was new to me and I was impressed with her. Finding these on e books has been good because I don't see very well and don't get out much anymore

Kindle Customer: Poor Bosch, he is getting old but he has been partnered with a lady cop and they get into all kinds of scrapes, great plots and definitely recommend but read in order so you can see how they get together and follow the story…

California Finn: I really enjoyed this one. Ballard and Bosch are an amazing team. We get more Ballard this time. Her character shows more development this time. The two storylines are both compelling. She has learned a lot from her mentor.

George P. Wood: The Dark Hours is Michael Connelly’s 36th novel, the fourth featuring LAPD late-shift detective, Renée Ballard. In it, Ballard investigates two crimes with the help of Harry Bosch, former LAPD homicide detective, now private investigator. The first crime involves a series of rapes by two males dubbed “The Midnight Men.” The second involves the murder of Javier Raffa, a former gang member who went straight as a car mechanic.
The plot begins in the waning hours of December 31, 2020. As per usual for the date, the LAPD is out in force looking for drunk drivers and worried about people shooting guns in the air to celebrate New Year. That ballistic tradition is what provides cover for Raffa’s murder. But Ballard is also out on patrol because the Midnight Men tend to commit crimes at midnight on holidays.
Looming over these investigations is the growing distrust of cops because of the George Floyd murder and the social unrest it spawned, as well as the anxiety produced by nearly a year of the COVID pandemic. A recurring theme throughout the book is that cops are burned out and unwilling to do anything more than the barest of reactive policing. This frustrates...

LA: In "The Dark Hours," Michael Connelly's latest tour de force, the author gets to showcase Detective Renee Ballard, Harry Bosch's protégé, in the usual Connelly format: she's working two separate, unrelated cases; she's up against a male dominated LAPD, which interjects as many obstacles as possible; like Bosch, she needs to step outside the formal rules to solve the cases; she's more cunning and competent than the bad guys; and she solves the cases but is punished by her superiors for showing the public what a great cop does.
The two cases in this Connelly gem are totally different in every respect: two men are breaking into homes and raping the single women there, serial rapists; and a former gang member gone straight is assassinated on New Year's Eve by a former cop fronting a group of dentists who are part of a criminal business conspiracy. Different characters, different parts of Los Angeles, different techniques, but the same Connelly-given drive to solve the crime, protect the public, and be the cops who actually "protect and serve."
Connelly is the ultimate police procedural auteur. His background as a crime reporter for several newspapers in Florida and...
