P. C. Smith: Sweet and touching story with some unusual twists. Makes you think and hopefully reach out to others. I would recommend this book.

MISS CCA: I was upset when this book ended and really enjoyed following Hubert's journey as well. I also liked the little twist, and didn't see it coming. My favourite book of the year so far.

Cumbrian Lady: I loved it at first and was enjoying the story a lot, but then in my opinion Mike Gayle spoilt a really good feel good vibe by being too clever with the plot.
I found it totally contrived that Rose had died and Hubert was just talking to himself. After all the whole novel is about Hubert’s panic that his daughter will find out about the lies he has told. The ending could have been a delight and all the ends tied up in a feel good way and I just felt that the author had gone out of his way to disappoint the reader and this had been a conscious decision. What a pity!!

siobhan: I was not sure at the beginning of this book and it seemed very slow going that I’ve read this with lots of breaks. However, the last half of the book, I’ve binged read in one sitting with tears in my eyes. What a profound read. Definitely worth reading.

Corey: I picked this up on a whim! And I’m glad I did. A story about life, love, family and the human spirit. I enjoyed the colorful characters, the twists, and the gracious continuity weaving “then and now” over the span of more than 50 years. Nicely written with a real takeaway: getting out meeting people and being there for one another. Good ole fashion community building.

Michelle: Meet Hubert Bird, a Black Jamaican man who has loved and lost, over and over.

We have two timelines going on here. In the first, Hubert is in his early twenties and makes the journey from Jamaica to the UK to start a new life. We see him disembark the boat and experience life in London. The racism, the hostile attitudes which only increase when he starts a relationship with a white woman, Joyce.

In the second timeline Hubert is in his eighties, his wife has been gone for over a decade and Hubart has cut himself off from the living.

This is a successful dual timeline in my opinion, I was invested equally in both and didn't mind the chapters hopping between the two.

This book is a mood. If the world is overwhelming and you want to curl up under a blanket with some wholesome characters who will warm your heart while dealing with the worst life can offer, this is the cast I'd recommend for you.

Four stars.

Read for the June 2023 Gloss Bookclub, I'm so glad this book was put on my radar.

TreBerry: Kinsley-ñera!!! My favorite girl, holding my favorite book on our favorite day. My baby’s 15th birthday 🥳!! I’ll always remember the 21st night of September 💞How did my baby grow up so fast? I still see her as that 4 lb 7 oz newborn with the 3 loud cries. What better way to celebrate on booksta than with this absolutely lovely book?!

Why this is theee most wonderful book ever…

I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK, especially the unforgettable characters: Hubert Byrd, Ashley, Jan, Gus, Joyce. The past and the present sections all captured my full, undivided attention and awe. It was a remarkable story of seeing the good in people, allowing yourself to be open and vulnerable, and just simply being there for someone.

AGAPE LOVE! ❤️ I aspire to be like Ashley and try to see the good in humanity, remain optimistic and not let the bad outweigh the good. I loved how she cared for Hubert. I loved Hubert’s story as a Jamaican immigrant in London and his unwavering love for Joyce that endured. I loved the message of looking beyond someone’s color, age, status and seeing them for who they truly are.

I cried so many times, this story pulled at my...
