Anthony VanArsdale: Bought this to replace the camera on a 7-year-old backup system I had purchased. The new camera mounted up to the existing wiring that I already had, and the video quality is substantially better than my old camera. It also does not have infrared, so it does not go to black and white at night. instead it has lights and along with your reverse lights it is able to stay in full color which I find to be nicer.

Clare: I've had this unit for a couple of months now. It works amazingly well and has materially added to the safety of my and my wife's driving.

First, installation is not exactly "easy" as the manufacturer says. The most intricate part of the install is attaching the camera to the back of the car. You might be able to use the screws on your license plate, but when I tried that the camera covered too much of the license plate. So I drilled two holes just above the plate. If you do this, buy some grommets to go into the holes you drill to create a seal between the camera strap and the trunk to eliminate water entry. I was able to route the camera wire up behind the license plate light to get it into the trunk. You may need to drill a third hole. There are not screws in the package, so you'll have to go get your own, and any other hardware for the job (e.g., wire, wire nuts).

When running the wires through the trunk lid, I discovered that the wire harness in the car was too short, so I had to splice in a bit of wire to get enough length to join it to the camera harness. So you might want to have a little wire and wire nuts on hand for that purpose.

Amazon Customer: Aloha, My Mana'o

The backup camera/monitor kit is to help me with the least amount of time and help from others to hookup my utility-trailer to my Volkswagen Vanagon.

I installed the camera on to my van's rear lic. plate. Attached the monitor to rear mirror, (up- front), wired the camera 12vdc power, (+/-), to the backup light wire at the taillight, (driver-side), fixture; used splicing- connectors, (RED # 18-20 gauge wire), ran the power cable through the back area of engine compartment, (rear-engine van), to the lic. plate then plugged the power-plug to the camera power cable.

At the camera, plugged the video cable, (supplied/w kit, approx. 18ft ), to camera's video cable, then ran it , following the engine wire harness at the side of engine, secured it with cable ties to the wire harness.
note, to prevent damaged to video cable and power cable, I ran them through heat/weather/phyical flexible wire tubing in areas where needed.
