Comments

m. tollervey: It’s surprisingly well written - humorous - entertaining and well paced with lots of individual character stories which are brilliantly outlined and described .
James Herriot is not shy about revealing some of his own shortcomings as he lives and works among the people in this area of Yorkshire and his obvious love of animals and the enormous efforts he goes to as he does his best for them in all weather and at all times is truly admirable .
I really recommend this book

Amazon Customer: I love all the James Herriot books, with this one being no exception. Each chapter captures your imagination straight away and as well as the side splitting humour all the way through, there is a real sensitivity to it all. All the James Herriot books are such a comfort to read!

Keiran McAllister: I have read all these books many years ago, long before digital kindles. Then a nice deal popped up for £0.99 for this collection and I just couldn't say no.
Ideally I guess for the purists out there I would recommend getting the individual books in release order. These compilations dictate the content for us. Some stories are missing.
Not a problem for me as stated I have read them previously.
These real life tales are simply the best. They make me laugh and cry and I am in the Dales with him.
I read extensively, all sorts of books, all sorts of subjects. Over my long reading life I have come to appreciate true and enduring quality. These books have it in abundance.
I could argue that every British citizen should prove they have read them to qualify for a passport.
If you are just thinking about dipping into this man's world just do it. Unless you are a person that hates all animals and people you cannot fail to engage.

suku: I am re-reading James Herriot after more than 25 years and his books make for wonderful reading - a real must for animal lovers, filled with humour and full of insights into veterinary life in Yorkshire in the 30's.

GrannyK: I love the James Herriot books! My only complaint is that the book is in sad shape. I usually only buy used books in "Very Good" condition and I would describe this book as "Poor" condition. As far as the James Herriot books go - I would recommend them all! They are based on a vet's real experiences and I love his descriptions of the English countryside. I feel transported there when I read his books. A quieter, more peaceful and beautiful time.

LoveVT: I wish people would know what they were talking about before they wrote something ridiculous. The "All Things Great and Small" series was created AFTER this series. Each book in Great and Small is two of the other books combined. When James Herriot got his books published in America, it was on the condition that each American edition would be two of the other books. Just read The Real James Herriot: A Memoir of My Father by James Wight. Again, please know what you're talking about before you get all rude about something. gilly8: I agree with the reviewers who were upset, as I was, to find out that these are merely retitled Herriot books, in fact, just PORTIONS of the original books, retitled. It should be made more clear by the publisher!

However, I do have a reason to buy these: they come in large print which the usual Herriot set does not, and it is helpful for my elderly mother.

By looking over the "combo" editions of these "retitled" books, I think the order is:

1. If Only They Could Talk
2. It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet
3. Let Sleeping Vets Lie
4. Vet in Harness
5. Vets Might Fly
6. Vet in Spin
7. The Lord God Made Them All

Sal: It's not an amazingly well written story. It's a bunch of fun, feel-good anecdotes that are woven together to give you an idea of the author's daily life as a young vet. A good thing to write on the inside cover: a pound was equivalent to 20 shillings or 240 pence and a British pound in 1930 was worth about $270 American dollars today.
