J Gregory: After watching an interview with Chef AJ I bought this book because what she had to say was eye opening for me. I hadn't realised that while I thought I was eating healthy, I was not accounting for trigger foods and calorie dense foods eg nuts, nut milks, seeds etc. I was also not purely plant based. Since making these adjustments I've seen remarkable changes in a short time and feel lighter and more energised. Once I reach my optimum natural weight I will begin reintroducing small amounts of high caloric foods now I know how dense they are. The only downside to this book is the repetition of certain ingredients in recipes and the index at the back could be better. I wonder if that is a strategy so you sign up for more offerings...I guess you have to make a living...I highly recommend this book as a starter to a lean plant based whole foods lifestyle.

M.S.: Having read the book as well as McDougall's, I decided to give it a try: I no longer ate flour products or sugar, really stuck with whole-grain, I left out all oil, nuts and avocado. I started out as pre-diabetic with otherwise good blood tests. Now, four months later my results: I lost one kilogram. Yes, one. It's not impressive at all. I am hungry all the time, and it just kept getting worse - and this while not really losing. For one month now, I have been terribly tired, I could hardly do my exercise any more. But the worst thing is, I lost more than half my hair! After three months, I started to experience severe shedding. I've never had that, not even after my pregnancies (that was very mild hair loss in comparison), not with any other diet, not since being plant-based either (which I have been for several years). I thought it must be some vitamin deficiency or thyroid issue, so I had blood tests done. Everything seems fine. But, and that's a big but: my LDL has gotten worse. Imagine. No animal products, nearly no sugar, no floury products, only whole-grain. I was told that might be due to the carb-heavy food. Also, the doctor then explained to me that hair loss begins about...

April: I love this book. I went plant based four months ago. As a “paleo” eater all my life, enviably thin, I tell people I was rotting from the inside out. My cholesterol started going up despite following what I thought was a healthy diet. I did a three week trial of a plant based diet , and was SHOCKED at the drop in my cholesterol levels. Chef AJ has been plant based for many years and while I didn’t and don’t feel I have weight that I need to lose I am now fully committed to this way of eating and she provides wonderful solutions on how to continue leading a healthful life. Some reviews report her methods as extreme and if you are someone who doesn’t have weight to lose then maybe you will feel this way. I don’t have weight to lose but I have health to gain and she has wonderful recipes and tips for this. Her twenty one day of being plant based compliant is something I fully agree with. Your labs alone WILL change. I love the vegetables for breakfast because it really does stop your cravings and guarantees that you get your veggies in. Since changing to a plant based diet I have not at all missed dairy and meats. I’ve been shocked and the health benefits have been...

Mia: This book contains great Information but I think the advices there are a bit too extremist, the moderation is key to success when it comes to diet/staying healthy. Don’t know how much salt is good to you? Use a tiny lil bit and you will be just fine. Apply this principle to all food categories and you shall never fall in any crisis/urge to binge.

birdsong68: I have just started AJ's book, so I will update this review in the future. I'm truly enjoying reading about AJ's personal experiences with her own weight loss journey. I admire her wide-ranging knowledge of the science behind the Ultimate Weight Loss program, as well as her personal observations with individual clients and years of teaching classes in all types of settings around the world. She really knows her stuff!
I'm just now getting into the core of the program, what's required, what I'd have to give up (possibly forever!) and how I'd have to significantly change the way I eat. And I mean REALLY change, like to the tune of eating pounds of veggies each day, beginning with breakfast - or VFB (veggies for breakfast) as AJ calls it. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that!
I am 74 y.o., retired on Social Security, and live in a mobile home park with my partner who doesn't like a whole lotta cooking going on in our very small kitchen area. To go forward with this program, I will absolutely need to purchase, at the very least, an Instant Pot, and likely an air fryer just to start, and eventually an oven (his old stove no longer works; we use as storage and put...

AmazonCustomer: I bought this book because I loved Chef AJ's previous book (Unprocessed) and I wanted some motivation and guidelines to start my weight loss journey. I really love the book, about half of is very useful information about calorie density, what we should eat, or should not eat, etc. There are also recipes that I cannot wait to try. It is VERY difficult to find recipes that are plant based, free of sugar, salt and oil, so I am very grateful for this book! The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because I was hoping for more pictures (not a single picture comes with the recipes), and the book keeps mentioning the eat the food "to the left of the red line", but we were not given a visual of that calorie chart (it is described with words only).
Edit: Oops, I just noticed that the calorie chart is actually on the back cover of the book! And in case people are wondering, I have lost about 15 pounds in 2 months by following the program! :)

Jay: I have been in the Ultimate Weight Loss (UWL) program for a over a year. This book is based on the principles taught by Chef AJ in her UWL program. This program is the only one I ever tried as it is in many ways close to the healthy lifestyle I was brought up in. Since I was familiar with the benefits of this lifestyle, I felt confident in trying it to lose weight and regain my health. I had gradually gained 45lbs from my 20’s due to some unhealthy habits from college life like eating donuts, buffet meals, pastries etc. I woke up quickly and that prevented me from gaining even more weight. But due to the lack of knowledge about calorie density etc., I kept gaining weight gradually. I was afraid of trying any diet programs until UWL as they are restrictive and unsustainable. I ran into Chef AJ’s UWL program by chance and I was willing to give it a shot. UWL is not a diet. Its a lifestyle!
I did not agree with SOS and
Flour free diet as recommended in UWL initially (I agreed with no alcohol). But I did agree that it should be limited. I was however willing to try UWL principles sincerely. Through simple experiments I realized the truth about how salt, oil, sugar and...
