R. Burke: My wife is a Blue Zones adherent, having taken her company to be Blue Zone certified in that county. Having a scienctific background, I am skeptical about health claims of various diets and practices which isolate particular practices and defy common sense. But when one examines cultures which empirically exhibit high rates of long life expectancy, you can't argue that, only evaluate the common denominators to their lives, and that is what Dan has done as exhibited as the 'Power 9'. If you read this, you will likely make changes to how you live simply by being aware.

5t4n5 Dot Com: There’s a lot of interesting stuff contained within this book. Good luck if you can find yourself in a situation where you have all the support and society around you that allows you to achieve these things.

Sadly, most of us simply don’t have the land available to farm our own organic vegetables and fruit for every meal, most people don’t live in places where they can drink pure water that isn’t some other town’s poorly-treated sewage dumped upstream into the river that fills the local reservoir, and most people don’t get to live in places free of all the traffic, and industrial, produced noise and air pollution.

Most people won’t ever be surrounded by family and friends their whole lives that would support, share and help them in achieving the same organic wholefood, stress free, pollution free, clean living lifestyle that is espoused in these stories.

I’d heard a lot of good things about this book and i really was looking forward to reading it. Having read it, i just find most of it disingenuous, in that it is utterly ridiculous to suggest that most people could have a lifestyle like this even if they wanted to. But hey, don’t throw the...

sam: There's loads of info currently available on healthy eating and lifestyle - but much is just opinion and not based on fact. This book differs - it reports on the people who actually live long lives. It is thus fact based and therefore more valuable than most of the others. The advice is useful. Definitely worth a read.

And prevention is the same way; it has to be a daily activity.” With this in mind, Dan Buettner, accompanied by various teams of doctors and researchers, goes on a globe trot to find out which cultures live the longest and why. From Seventh Day Adventists in Southern California to Costa Rica to Greece to Okinawa he tracks down and interviews the most aged healthy people on the planet. Then in The Blue Zones he lays out lessons on how to live longer based on the interviews and research. Vegans vegetarians and gym haters will be thrilled with this book. All of the diets include very little or no meat. All the cultures encouraged modest, regular physical activity like walking and working in the garden. None of them went to gyms.

While the diets varied there were commonalities like eating fruits or vegetables, cultivating their own gardens full of green foods, and having a fulfilling social and/or family life. Several cultures drank daily herbal teas; most avoided dairy. Ikarians drink alcohol daily; Sardinians drink only a locally made wine and Adventists drink no alcohol at all. Okinawans...

Marketa: Best Practices aus aller Welt für zuhause - gesundes Altern zum Nachmachen. 9 Lektionen, die man teilweise ganz gut ins Leben integrieren kann und auch zum Nachdenken anregen. Wissenschaftliche Grundlage etwas fraglich - aber vieles leuchtet ein. Was haben diese 5 Regionen gemeinsam? Zum größten Teil geht es im Buch um die Ernährung - aber auch die anderen 8 Punkte machen zum Teil schon Sinn vermehrt darauf zu achten. Das Buch könnte um eine Spur kürzer sein, wenn das Storytelling (ohne viel Mehrwert) zwischen den Learnings etwas kürzer ausfallen würde. Das ist ein Punkt Abzug, aber unterm Strich - Empfehlung! Schade, dass das Buch nicht auf Deutsch verfügbar ist - dann könnten mehr in den Genuss kommen.
