MDC: An enjoyable story similar in style to the Johannes Johannsen books (eg. The 100 year old man that climbed out of the window and disappeared). The film is similar to the book but the book has more to say.

MissEllaneous: Don't expect what you saw in the movie. This is so much better! Entertaining, sad sometimes. It is very colorful and fun to visualize the various events. A very enjoyable read!

Mr. J. Perry: I enjoyed the film (which I saw long before reading the book) but as usual, the book is so much better! Tom Hanks did an okay job portraying Forrest, but when you read the book, the Forrest character's size comes into play many times, and Hank's slight stature doesn't quite cut it. I don't picture Tom Hanks' version of Forrest whilst reading the book, except for maybe his voice and speech pattern. I love the innocent, naive way Forrest deals with the trials and tribulations of life and the book turns what could be unbearably sad situations into something matter-of-fact and even light hearted - and that's all I've got to say about that!

Julie Barnes: Enjoyed this book. Easy read. Found it funny. I can't believe I am saying this, but I enjoyed the book more than the movie!

Amazon Customer: I love the movie but it doesn’t come close to how great this book is. Do yourself a favor and buy it

Beverly Elkins: One of the few books that the movie is better. Yet it is a delightful read and makes you think about life in itself. Forrest’s adventures are fun and amazing. I would definitely recommend.

Pamala Judd: I read this book years ago (before the movie) and enjoyed the comedy aspect of the book. In fact I remember being disappointed in the movie thinking they got it ALL WRONG! (though, like the rest of the world-I’ve grown to love the movie, as well;)
I decided to read it again (20-ish years later) and I was not disappointed!
Do not expect the Tom Hanks version of Forrest!!!
It is unfortunate that this book is overshadowed by the movie. The movie was obviously ‘inspired’ by the book-each is it’s own work of art. They really cannot and should not be compared.
The book (written in first person through Forrest’s voice) is a compilation of outrageous (and mostly ridiculous) situations Forrest finds himself in. It is a comedy with heart as he meets memorable characters along the way.
It’s an easy and fun read once you get past the phonetically written text/grammar-which is honestly part of the charm that brings Forrest to life.

grainne m mchale: First off, it's really funny. And worth it just for that. But it's a bit hard to say about this book. It's vastly different to the movie in terms of tone and content. It's a lot more gritty and smutty. Forest is not a very likeable guy after a certain point. The whole life story of this Forest is interesting but half way through the unbelievable things that happen to him just get a little tiring - they're much more unbelievable than in the movie. The best part about it is that is starts off really well and gets so funny, much wittier than the movie. The second half of the book, it just feels like the author maybe got a little fed up and just hogged along to get to the word count in the bag. I say this only because the second part is really depressing with no humour and little redeeming qualities for Forest. I'm glad the movie did well because in terms of a plot, it is far better. I'm glad the book was written, though because it is really great up to a point and exceeds the film for style. One spoiler alert, though, is that the book's story is very far away from the sweet, twee tone of the movie. It's much bleaker, harsher and more grounded in reality, as far as Forest's reality...
