jlanzy: These sprout very quickly, about 2-3 days. I use these to make sprouted grain bread and all hulled barley is heat treated to remove hull and/or retard mold growth on grains. But this strain grows without hulls so the enzymes necessary for sprouting remain viable. I had gone through several prior attempts to sprout hulled barley with disappointing failure assuming it was just old barley until I learned about the processing that most barley undergoes. Thank you Shiloh Farms for making this variety available. Now off to bake another loaf of whole grain flourless bread.

Amazon Customer: I just love the texture, crunch and healthiness of hull-less barley.

But it’s hard to find, somewhat expensive, and not that well sorted. I found other unknown black seeds mixed in, along with chaff and a few very small stones. Basically you need to hand sort the grain on a plate or other flat surface prior to cooking, which is time consuming.

If there are no other options i guess it’s still worth it, but not sure why this should be required…

Doctor S 457337: This unhulled barley is delicious and nutritionally better than processed barley. It does take a longer while to cook, about 45 minutes, which for me is no problem. I especially like barley with chicken dishes.

AH: I cannot find this in any stores. I use it to make a breakfast dish (basically similar to oatmeal, but much heartier and healthier). I use 1/3 cup of hull-less barley; 1/3 cup of Organic whole oat groats; and 1/3 cup of organic rye berries; 1 tsp salt and 3.5-4 Cups of water. I put that in my instapot on SLOW COOK for EIGHT HOURS. Maybe you could do it on high for 4 hours, but I'm just in the habit of tossing it all in before bed. This amount lasts just over a week (I just use 1/2 cup in the morning). (I didn't create the recipe, it's from a cookbook called Good Food, Great Medicine).
