Set Your Outdoor Timer Easily with the Rain Bird SST-600O

Gretchen Heffler: The product appears to be new, pull out battery start, cord is factory twist tie, but kind of empty of packing inside and the outside box appears to have been opened before. I think this was a miss manufacture of the outside box. It does work, nothing appears wrong except I had to drill a hole in the bottom (where a hole should already be) to place the wires through to make the connection. There were two circular indentations but no hole. Looking at other pictures of this there should have been a hole.

dcdude: Found this here on Amazon. Cheaper price than big orange box. I was replacing my Orbit 57894, which never worked properly. When it started to not shut off the valves after only about four short years of service, I became very concerned about massive water wastage. Since I'm about to leave for vacation, it had to go. No more Orbit for me. I was able to avoid some key pitfalls in this process, so I want to share three key tips with you:

TIP #1 - if you want a plug, make sure it has one.
I really wanted the Rainbird ESP4ME because it looks cooler and I think that I deserve "commercial grade" everything :) Price is about the same. Be aware that the other model is a HARD WIRE ONLY so it doesn't ship with a 110V wall plug. Since I already had an outlet and my Orbit was a plug in, I wanted to be sure that I got a timer with a plug.

TIP #2 - Consider getting more zones than you think you need.
Even though I only run three zones, I'm glad I got this six station model. Reason is, if your valves are scattered about your irrigation area (like mine) you're going to run multiple cables, two in my case. While you can twist the two Common (white?) wires together and use a four...

rsmithedmond: I replaced a 10 year old Rainbird controller with this unit. This is an outdoor unit so it is made pretty well. The main feature I was after is the ability to water a zone more than once a day. You can water all the zones once a day or any and all zones as much as 5 times a day. The multiple times a day is preset to certain hourly intervals based on the number of times a day selected. I wanted to water the zone around my air conditioner several times a day to cool down the condenser and add some humidity to the area.

The transformer for this unit is inside the unit itself instead of plugged into the wall. This is a much cleaner look. There is a yellow pull tab on the unit, but there is no mention of what it does. I pulled it out and on the end it says battery. There is nothing mentioned in the instructions or specifications about a backup battery. After doing some internet research I found that the unit has an internal rechargeable battery that it uses to save the settings in case the power goes out. My old init had a 9v battery that had to be changed when it went dead. The internal battery is much nicer.
