ken tomaszewski: This is a solid steel item, nothing fancy and, so far, the tightening mechanism works great. It could be prone to rust, so keep oiled, or spend a few bucks on bottle of bluing, and treat the entire piece. I did so, and it looks nicer, and could help prevent corrosion a little more.

Brock Wood: This compass is basically indestructible. Affordable. Set screw keeps the compass set tight on the angle you choose. Makes huge but precise circles and arcs. I used it to draw circles and arcs on large pieces of cardboard for a hobby project. Only one tiny complaint. The small tube and set screw that hold the pencil in place seem to be sized for a pencil with a big diameter. An ordinary “number 2 yellow” pencil kind of wobbles even when the set screw is screwed down really tight on the pencil. I remedied that with a little duct tape wrapped around the body of the pencil. Still, i think I will pick up a “carpenter’s” pencil or even one of those fat, first grade pencils, to achieve a better fit. Satisfied.

David MargrettaDavid Margretta: I'll start this off with saying that this thing is solid. The movement is tight and there's no slop or flex in it at all. It's definitely built well, but there are a few issues to be aware of.
The compass comes in a flimsy, stapled closed, package. Similar to products purchased from Harbor Freight. It's also coated in machine oil and smells like Harbor Freight products. This is likely to prevent the rusting that another reviewer mentioned. I wiped it down with paper towels which seemed to remove enough of the oil to reduce the smell. I plan on cold-blueing it to help prevent rust in the future.
The next issue is with the bevels cut into the edges of the arms. They're rough, to say the least. It doesn't affect the operation of the compass. It just doesn't look good. I took a needle file and some 180 grit sandpaper to one arm and it cleaned up pretty nice. I tried to show the difference in the photos. It just looks like a higher quality product when done. I'll finish the other side now that the review is done. It's worth the 15-20 minutes spent.

Marvin McConoughey: I like the size (large), the good workmanship and the affordable price. It is a very basic tool that does not have the useful micro-adjustments featured by the best Starret pencil compasses. But, it is available now, does the job without fuss or drama, and should be high on your shopping list if you want a large pencil compass for your shop.

concorde: Used it to help me mark out a large hexagon on plywood, so i could cut the base for an outdoor planter.
Certainly gives a large circle range and is robust and easy to use.
