Peter Marshall: I stupidly bought this specifically to draw a 54cm circle. It is clear from the picture it cannot do this. It is claimed it can draw a circle from 1/2" to 22" (1.5cm to 56cm). This is not possible. The largest circle is around 30cm (12inches) if pencil positioned roughly as shown in photo (obviously extending a bit further than impractically shown). You can stretch this to around 14.5" (37cm) if pencil clamped in holder at top of pencil. Maybe a 3ft pencil would work....

Thomas K.: Heavy-duty & well built, however the single screw pencil holder bites into the soft pencil wood, allowing the pencil to wobble within the mount; when you try to go over the same arc several times to darken the marking, you may get a small shift in the arc.

Nick: Sturdy as an anvil. The compass lacks a knob at the apex to allow smooth finger rotation. Also, would have been helpful to provide a moveable set needle. I am describing a compass specific for drafting however. Alexander, Napoleon, and Hitler would enjoy the reach of this compass on a map. All in all it is usable, functional, and will live on for generations due to its sturdy simplicity.

John Feesey: I like the sturdy arms, the lock mechanism and the pencil holder.Its meant to scribe large and solid, like on plywood, and it does the job.
Its made of mild or carbon steel and its not plated and its hefty so it needs to be kept in a case away from moisture or it will rust .The points are not replaceable and if dropped it stands a chance to damage itself.It came packaged in light machine oil so if you work with fibre products or bare wood you will paint, do take care.
I will spray a light protective coat of clear Tremclad over it. I built a small wood box to house it so I'm happy with it overall.

DataJanitor: I had a hard time finding a compass that had good reviews and looked sturdy enough to use for woodworking. These looked promising, so I ordered them. They are exactly as described.
When used for scribing, the points meet correctly for the zero radius and make a decent mark. The wing that locks the radius can be tightened enough to make the results reproducible. The compass has some heft to it, but the finish is not very bright, giving it a kind of rough dull feel. No finger prints to worry about. These are the positives.
On the other hand, inserting a pencil, the point of the pencil will not meet the stable arm, limiting the smallest circle as the description says. The pencil is not well supported, so you should use a short one rather than a long one as pictured. I found the compass stiff when trying to expand it; so, small adjustments to the radius are a little tricky; but, it isn't bad.
I would like the compass better if it had needles for the pivots, that way they would be sharper and replaceable if something happened to them.
Overall, for the price, these are pretty good in a shop environment. For drafting, I'd choose something else.
