Midland WR120B/WR120EZ NOAA Emergency Weather Alert Radio - Stay Safe in Severe Weather Conditions

Paul Lentz in Peachtree City: Best feature: I can select from among some fifty alerts from the National Weather Service that I apply to this part of the country and that I want to trigger the radio. This is much more specific and useful than the general "severe weather" alerts offered by systems other than the National Weather Service (NWS). Second best feature: I can select my county and, since weather around here usually moves from west-to-east, and I'm on the western edge of my county, I can select the neighboring county to the west, too. I anticipate Wednesdays, when the NWS tests the system and my radio displays an amber light. This weather and emergency alert radio has every feature for which I might ask. It beats hands-down alerts that rely on cell phone location. As tornado alley moves with climate change and as storms of all kind become more common and stronger, this radio has become more and more important. Given the purchase price, it's a great "insurance policy."

David K. Johnson: Bought this after I moved from the southeastern US to the Midwest into the Tornado Alley area - thought it would be a good idea to stay on top of weather alerts. The alert notification is loud enough I can hear it throughout my apartment - for larger houses/multiple floors, you may want at least one more, though. Included instructions were clear and easy to follow, so setup was fairly quick.

Designer Mom: We wanted to have a weather radio for our small RV after experiencing a bad storm. We've been using it in the house as it's been way too hot to camp. Wow, it's loud! This is good as we will certainly hear it upstairs in the night. It has only alerted us at appropriate times and not too often. The sound quality of the report is more like that of a shortwave radio, but it's understandable. I was grateful for the video I found online as it was much easier to understand than the manual. As they describe it - it's like a smoke detector that sits there silently until there is a problem. This is a helpful and accurate description. Every home and RV should have one of these as our storms are becoming more severe. It can literally save your life.

JAL: With all the recent wildfires in our region, I purchased this radio hoping to get EAS Fire Evacuation alerts. I was pleased to note that the radio did work as expected when I received the required weekly alert. After receiving a few required weekly alerts, I investigated how to turn off these alerts. To do this, you need to either set the alerts to default or specifically turn off the weekly alerts using the menu system. My radio came configured for ALL ALERTs. To set the radio ALL Default:

Menu --> Up Arrow --> Select Events --> Up Arrow --> All Default --> Menu --> Menu --> Saving

You can go to the Midland Website and download the "Selectable Alert Chart for Midland Weather Radios" to see the default settings. Specifically:

Freedom: I do not own a cell phone. Living in northeastern MA, we typically get a few days warning of any weather issues for this area: blizzard, thunderstorm, and so on. Suddenly, this year, my state has had 7 tornados! Not normal. The first one, I got up in the morning, was busy, and did not turn on the television for an hour. When I did, I was surprised to learn there was a tornado watch for my area. Talking with friends, 3 of them had no notifications from their cell phones, and all of them thought they had it all set up. I started asking around as to how I can get warnings, being as I do not own a cell phone. Someone on a weather forum kindly explained about weather alert radios and suggested I investigate. Did my research and decided on this one. So far, I am pleased with the result. It was easy to set up, and I tend to be technically challenged, so that's a big positive right there. I've heard the beeps and learned about flash flood warnings for my area, and for a severe thunderstorm. The friends who never had any notice with their cell phones are now interested in this as well. I also like the radio, just press the button and I can listen to the forecast. Much easier than searching...
