Tradegirl: Our family started a plant-based diet a few months ago and it has changed our lives for the better. I started reading anything I could get my hands on to learn more and make sure we were eating a variety of foods to get all the nutrients we need. When I came across this book, I didn't expect to be blown away by how ahead of his time Dr. McDougall has been. Everything you need to start and maintain a plant-based diet is in this book. The couple that he follows through the 10-day program and how it works for them brought all the ideas into action and how you may see similar results. This book was written in the 90's and it seems that everyone now just copies his ideas.
I am in my early 50's and was having so much joint pain and strange ailments popping up. I knew something had to change so I gave it a try. I am shocked how simple it was to make the switch. I've lost 14 lbs. in 4 months (148 to 134lbs.) and I feel that all I've done is eat lots of potatoes! My husband is off all heart medications, my daughter's reflux and headaches are gone, and my joints are back to normal. sophiesmommy: Dr. McDougall's program is one of those perfect nutritional programs that is right under our noses! His health plan is plant based and starch based----that is, the good starches, such as corn, rice and potatoes. These starches have sustained whole civilizations for centuries (Asians, Aztec Indians, etc) who never had heart disease, diabetes, or obesity issues. Natural starches are much maligned, but it is NOT the baked potato that is fattening; it's garnishing it with butter and sour cream! It's not rice itself that causes obesity; it's the cheeses added to the casserole that cause the high rise in blood sugars. Dairy and meat are killing people in America, and Dr. McDougall's book explains why that is.
If you want to stop harming your body, and stop harming animals and ruining the environment, read this book!!! It will change your life. Dr. McDougall's opinons are widely sought after; he is featured on the documentary, "Forks over Knives".

Taz: My husband grew up on a ranch, roping cows. He ate meat 3 times a day and thought I was crazy suggesting a vegan diet. He also, however, had monthly shaking chills and fevers to 104. Unbeknownst to us at the time, he has a genetic liver disorder. We thought it was autoimmune hepatitis. In any case, I said let's do this 12 day program. We'll check your blood tests day 1 and day 12 and see what happens. His cholesterol went from 199 to 163 in 12 days and his liver enzymes became for normal for the first time since he knew he was sick. He hasn't had an episode of fever and chills since, except one time when he thought he could forego the vegan diet. He paid the price for that and has since discovered that the body doesn't like ingesting toxins again once it has gotten rid of them.

The book is fantastic as it has shopping lists and recipes for every meal, great for a novice like me. The Onion, Lettuce and Tomato recipe was not enough food for us (I recommend adding hummus), but all the other recipes were great.
