LG BP175 Blu-Ray Disc Player with DVD Playback Capability

TIZ: I was very optimistic after receiving this Blu-Ray/DVD player..

It was very nice until it just stopped working. Period. It's dead. One year at best...

Todd Bulgarelli: Picture quality is good, the included 6-foot HDMI cable is very nice (in fact I've switched it out with another Blu-Ray player from a different manufacturer in another room requiring a longer cable, and am using the shorter HDMI cable from that older unit with this newer one; works just fine).
Drawbacks are that there is no timer counter on this player, although you can pause the disc and the time elapsed will be shown on-screen; also, the remote control has a narrow beam, so you pretty much have to aim the control right at the unit when using it-- no "fire-and-forget" here.
For the price, this Blu-Ray player is sufficient, and based on my experience with LG players in the past, I expect it will last many years.

Christopher: I owned a blue ray player for almost 14 years and finally had to recycle it. I was amazed at how expensive blue ray players cost these days and was happy to find this gem. I dont need the wireless, application, etc functionality that most players come with and was happy to find this one. The player is smaller than normal and is easy to set up. Navigation is also very simple. I did not attached a network cable as offered as I have a Roku player. Overall, very happy with this player and would recommend it!

AvidOutdoorsman: I knocked down on the menu and interface. Not 100% sure it’s a problem with the TV smartness or the DVD player’s smartness. What I do know I kept playing with it before it would even pull menu of movie. Once dvd played, it worked fine with a good pic.

The player does play burned DVD’s just fine. I tested both + and - R types. Even with these…getting the menu to pop up with the smart TV is a challenge.

What I have found works best is insert DVD, switch to DVD input, swear, swear more, power off DVD, power back on DVD, and menu pops up…eventually. Then things are smooth sailing (yes, tried changing tv to DVD input prior to inserting dvd…no different).

Maybe over time I will figure out a better method and reduce swearing. I still believe it’s an issue with the smart TV communicating with the smart DVD player. Unfortunately, I believe the lowest common denominator is prevailing and it becomes confused at what to do.

R. Young: Bottom line, I recommend this player. Nonetheless, be prepared to purchase a replacement HDMI cable. This is most inconvenient. [Installation would’ve taken five minutes.] Be aware that the Premium 6 Foot HDMI Cable by Orgoo, may be incompatible with the player itself.

I tried several times: the HDMI slot was just a little too small for this cable. As a result, you may have to spend eight dollars to get an HDMI cable that will fit with the player. Note: not everyone is reporting this problem.

The LG BP175 Blu-Ray Player is an entry-level unit. It works well for someone looking for an inexpensive player.

Last but not least, I would like to clarify: the Internet is not required. Nor will the player display a 'Nag Screen' insisting that the user set a connection to the web.
