Robert M. Harvey: I needed to replace the control board of my furnace after it starting acting weird and having a mind of it's own. It would start running when not needed and would also turn on and run without turning on the flame. After one expensive HVAC repair visit, with a recommendation to install a completely new system, I decided to swap out the control board. It's been working fine now for a couple months.

Chris: Back in 2016 I replaced the old board. This year, 2020, about 3 1/2 years later, that board failed and I got a new one. I swapped it out and it seemed to be working really well Today, 1 day after the return window closed the new board is failing. The symptoms are that even with the thermostat off (and even removed) the furnace fan will come on and blow for 1 minute 50 seconds and then stop for a variable amount of time ranging from 10 seconds to 5 minutes and blow for 1 minute 50 seconds. Rinse, repeat!

If you power off the furnace and wait a reasonable amount of time (say a minute or two) and turn it back on while the thermostat is calling for heat (i.e. the Red-White switch is closed and is conducting the 24 VAC) then the furnace will nicely go through its proper cycle of 1) flue fan, 2) ignitor power on, 3) gas valve open, 4) flame sense, 5) ignitor off, 6) big fan ramps up to medium speed. Then when thermostat sense proper temp and opens R-W circuit then 7) gas off, 8) some delay then flue fan off, and 9) after 2 minutes big fan off.

Then the malfunction cycle begins again - ugh.

Weirdly amazon says to contact Tjernlund Products, Inc. But their website...

RandWayn: Our furnace wouldn't kick on this fall so we had to call for service. The repairman instructed us that it was the circuit board and that he would need to either drive over an hour to pick one up (we would pay for his travel time) or order one and come back in a few days to install. He quoted us a price of $375 for the board plus installation (probably another $150 minimum). I'm a do it yourself kind of guy but when it comes to furnaces I let the experts do their thing. Since the weather warmed up I reluctantly opted he order the part and return in a few days while lamenting the fact that I will have to dish out another $500 to $600.

That night I thought I'd do a little research on the part and found out I could by a board that would fit my furnace for $97. I called the repair guy (who was a great guy and very professional) and asked him about the difficulty of installing the board. It didn't sound too hard but we're talking about something that could go boom if done incorrectly...or at least that's what I'm thinking.

I was still contemplating what to do when I read a review of an individual who had the same part as me and said he installed the board in 15 minutes....

StonedSoulPicnic: This is an excellent product that was delivered as promised.

As luck would have it, my furnace stopped working just before the holidays. I called the repairman who analyzed the symptoms and narrowed the problem to one of two components, one mechanical and one electronic, either of which would cost about $400 to repair. I gambled on it being the master control board, researched the specific part I needed for my furnace, and ordered it from Amazon.com. The part arrived a few days later in perfect condition.

A WORD OF WARNING: This part comes with a disclaimer that states it should only be installed by a qualified technician. I suppose that's because if you wire it incorrectly, bad things could happen. In theory, it is simple to swop out the old board for a new one but there are several wires and groups of wires that need to be moved to the new board. Therein lies the risk of making a mistake. As a novice, I was very concerned about getting this right the first time. To that end, I took a picture of the old board before I removed any wires so I would have a point of reference just in case I needed it. I then turned off the power to the furnace. Then I removed one wire...
