BOSTONBEAN: I have read and followed the advice in this book as well as Dr. Kaufmans previous novel Dropping Acid. I was diagnosed with paradoxical vocal fold disorder after years of misdiagnosis from Asthma to sinus issues. Once on the diet i could breath better and drastically lost weight and felt amazing. It was very difficult to follow the diet since there were not many options to choose from in the first book. Most recipes were not what the average American has access to. It would be so helpful if receipes could be adapted to more common dishes. I was driving all over gods creation to find ingredients and was shopping ever other day to stay on these food plans. I was working out in the gym 6 days a week but i think i burned more calories cooking all the time. ( they were delicious meals.) I would highly recommend it if you are serious about changing how you feel I just wish there were simpler recipes to choose from. Dr. Kaufmann guidance has been a life changer when I was disciplined to follow it!

thewordzsarthewordzsar: I'm impressed by Dr. Koufman's take on LPR and was so looking forward to this book. However, something has gone wrong with the printing and some of the recipe pages are printed incorrectly - see images. For example on page 151 is the recipe for Rice with Cumin and Turmeric. There should be one recipe per page but the title for this recipe is at the bottom of the previous page and the recipe starts with part of the first sentence of the intructions, followed by the list of ingredients, followed by the rest of the first instruction. The title for the next recipe is at the bottom of this page but the mangled instructions/ingredients are on the following page. This is repeated several times throughout the book and is very annoying. As per other UK reviewers, I find many of the recipes are oriental and not to my taste for everyday meals.

Cynthia: Very helpful guidance for "clean eating" and to identify foods that trigger acid reflux. I didn't want to treat with proton pump inhibitors-these won't cure the problem and have many potentially dangerous side effects. Dr. Koufman wrote a companion book with mostly vegetarian/vegan recipes, which is even better than Dropping Acid, in my opinion. I've been following a low-acid, whole food plant based diet for several weeks now, and am seeing significant improvement in the condition.

Libby Loo: If you have reflux or even a hint of reflux you have to buy this book.

I was having second thoughts and I thought it was too expensive at £18 and was about to send it back when I had a quick flick. Within five minutes I was hooked.

This doctor leaves no stone unturned she looks at every angle and it is a brilliant brilliant book that I feel sure will change my (and your) life.
And If I could afford to get the money to go on a “pilgrimage” to America and to be treated personally by Dr Jamie Kaufman, I would do so because she would transform every aspect of my health I am convinced of it.

The hidden perils of reflux whether it’s silent reflux.....non-silent reflux dancing reflux.....singing reflux ....heartburn reflux - or whatever reflux cannot be underestimated.

Helped along by masses of sugar consumption junkfood sugary cereals carbonated drinks we are heading for a collision with nature, early death, unnecessary surgery, pointless expensive medicines. And all we really have to do - if it not too late - is to rethink our eating.

Reflux she virtually says is at the centre of almost all things bad. I’m a non-smoker that has never been...

Eggy: Excellent book a sequel to her Dropping Acid book. Read both. Do not be put off by dated look. These contain nuggets of useful info not found elsewhere. As a Doctor I like that it has evidence behind most of what she says & that she has a reputation as a researcher. Has made me look at foods in a different light. Not sure about the recipes as I’m sure I can adapt things myself. Hadn’t heard of alkaline water before & useful to have clarity about quite a few things including medications as there is so much nonsense on the internet about alkaline diets & apple cider vinegar. I read Dr Aviv’s Acid Watcher Diet book too which supports the pepsin theory & is also useful for other things if you want to improve your overall health .Would be good if there was more info from anyone about how to strengthen diaphragmatic muscles.... back to internet for that.

Julia: A personal thank you to Dr. Koufman! This book was the missing piece to my puzzle.

Following my twin pregnancy six years ago, I developped a hiatal hernia which is a lifelong condition I now have to manage.
At first I stopped dairy, then gluten, then alcohol, then sugar, then coffee...and it wasn't enough.
All the while I was taking PPIs without understanding how detrimental they are to my health. After terrible side effects this last year, I went cold turkey and stopped them all together with the support of this book. In that first month without PPIs it was rough. My body had to go through withdrawl. I was tired and retreated from social life. But I kept on, ate simple, drank a lot of Mineral Water with a PH 8 and let my body rest.

What I learned from Dr. Koufman was how to eat an alkaline diet and create healing for the LES and the UES. After 3 months of following her diet, I am now able to incorporate some acidic food/drink paired with alkaline foods/drinks. One short expresso with a homemade oatmeal bar is now possible :). I really liked planning out my shopping/cooking/eating for the week. Being prepared is half the battle.

To read a book by a...

Barbara O: I have just finished reading Dr. Koufman’s Acid Reflux Diet book and I urge all fellow sufferers to take this miraculous journey. Her latest book is the capstone to her other two instructional reference volumes: Dropping Acid (2010) with recipes and The Chronic Cough Enigma (2014), that explore the causes and treatment of GERD and respiratory reflux or, respectively, gastroesophageal and laryngopharyngeal reflux. These three beautifully written solutions will save lives while paving an important new direction for the ENT and esophageal-scoping medical community still lost in the delusion of their own addiction to pharmaceuticals as cures for reflux disease.
In 2010, I discovered Dropping Acid and learned a new way to eat by choosing alkaline (safe) foods. After almost 40 years with night reflux unaided by Nexium for 25 years, I became conscious of the acidic food-sore throat connection and began to heal. Five years later, The Chronic Cough Enigma explained why I still coughed and had to clear my throat throughout the day. I can thank Dr. Jamie Koufman for the correct diagnosis which turned out to be “post-viral vagus nerve neuropathy,” an ailment that is more common than...

ChrisN: I'm quite disappointed with this book. It looks like it was put together to make some extra money. Apologies if that wasn't the case...
The first book, dropping acid, was wonderful. It had great recipes, lovely pictures and a small primer on silent reflux.
This book, caters mainly to vegetarians and vegans. While I have nothing against vegan cuisine (there are some absolutely delicious vegan recipes), I have a wife and two kids like like to eat a wide variety of foods. They are few and far between the recipes with eggs and meats.
That's where the art is, make a high ph meal using meat and fish and poultry. If I cook with grains, veggies, and exclude onions and peppers, i'd have to be a dimwit to make an acidic resulting meal. There are also ZERO pictures for inspiration. It really feels like someone put together some recipes to fill up a book - low acid recipes of course.
The book says it includes vegan and gluten free recipes, it should instead say vegetarian cookbook with a few non-vegetarian recipes thrown in. This is the maintenance phase diet, and I believe it should have been more inclusive of meats and poultry.
For the record, the tofu mushroom quiche form...

Gail Ramsey: After many many months of post nasal drip, throat clearing, then coughing, and hoarseness, even losing my voice occasionally, chest pain and aspirating saliva and pieces of food, and at one point coughing blood, (requiring chest x -Ray and endoscopy) all of which I treated with mucous reducing medication, antihistamines, saline nose drops, Alvuterol, cold medications and so on, It was suggested to me that GERD might be the cause of my afflictions. I ordered this book, and followed all the guidelines (still do). Within TWO DAYS my symptoms began to abate. And in one week I was a symptomatic. I knew I had GERD along with a hiatal hernia, but I had no idea these could be the source of all my problems. I have never suffered the traditional heartburn symptoms, and so I assumed I had allergies and other issues I didn't understand,,
I alkalize my drinking water now (via the suggestions in the book) don't eat or drink alcohol for three hour before bedtime, and I eat smaller meals, reducing acidic food, especially later In the day. I can still have a little chocolate and coffee, just not a lot. If you are hoarse often, cough, have any of the other symptoms I had do more than a month or...
