Diane M. Schuller: I've recently committed to being totally whole food, plant-based. In fact, one of the documentaries I watched that eventually led me to this point was "Forks over Knives."

I picked this book up to learn a bit more but also to help in the transition. It's easy to read and has what I was looking for.

The front half of the book is like a Coles Notes version of the information shared in the documentary. It's stated simply, to-the-point, and all of the information is science based. There are specific ideas for transitioning, for setting up the pantry and kitchen (in terms of what will be helpful in prepping meals), and for those who may wish to buy a few processed items there is important information on how to read labels.

The other half of the book are some starter recipes that include breakfast, appetizers, soups, salads & dressings, sauces, snacks, mains & sides, and desserts. These are all basic type recipes. For the foodie it's necessary to pump things up with some serious spice or herbs. But it's a solid starting point.

Amazon Customer: I absolutely LOVE this book. I bought it after I watched the documentary two or three times, and seriously this documentary, book and the Forks Over Knives cookbook all changed my life completely.

I lost weight, my acid reflux and sinus issues disappeared completely, I lost weight, gained a ton of energy, don't have to sleep as much anymore, my acne went away, even my hair is shinier (seriously! haha).

I can't explain to everyone how much this docu and books have helped me turn my life around. I never imagine ever being able to feel so good on a daily basis as I feel now eating a whole foods, plant-based (and organic) diet. I eat as much food as I want, and still lost weight, I never count calories or anything crazy like that - who needs to when you feed your body actual FOOD (and not processed trash and processed animal products!).

It's so crazy, but yet so simple, the concept of healing your body through what you eat. But it actually works. I literally haven't been sick in almost a year now, and I used to get sick ALL the time. I haven't even had so much as a cold! Sam Woodward: This book is a great accompaniment to  the DVD , which expands on the subject & doesn't waste too many pages in retreading the same ground. The sense I got from the documentary was that adopting a plant-based diet is important for optimizing health. The sense I got from this book is that adopting a plant-based diet is essential for sustaining the environment & preventing systemic cruelty towards animals. When I watched the DVD, I decided to become vegan for fairly selfish reasons but having read this book, I wanted to become one to benefit others too. And I'm certainly no hippie but it has made me rethink other ways in which we unknowingly harm our ecosystem.

Considering that  Forks Over Knives - The Cookbook  is available separately, I wasn't expecting so much of this book to be given over to recipes. At the time of writing, Amazon's sample above shows the contents page but doesn't quote any page numbers. My Kindle says that 29% of this book is given over to general info & the rest is given over to recipes, which are devoid of photographs. Tiberius: Book and DVD. The DVD needs to be watched first as it truly is the heavy of the documentation for what the book briefly discussed. It all discusses the research done by the China Studies and the reworking and evaluation done by these two incredible doctors and their associated teams of people who truly believe by the research that the strict vegetarian diet does truly stop the cancer cell production and they prove it. What they say is that the farmer products of meat, dairy, eggs including grass fed meat are what turn on the cancer cell production. They demonstrate by their research studies that those foods have to be 5% or less to keep cancer cells turned off; the catch is their studies just said keep it out of the diet. They also advocated a wholesome diet of fresh veggies and fruit and staying away from the processed foods chemical diet. Real food and real cooking like people used to do back in the 70's and 80's before the days of packaged food existence is what they recommend. It is the alkaline diet we are talking about. The book does this in three parts: (i) why a plant-based diet is best for your health, the planet, and the animals (37 pages); (ii) basic facts on plant-based foods (19 pages), and (iii) recipes (133 pages). While the bulk of the book is for recipes, there is a lot of powerful information in the first two parts that has appeal for anyone from the newcomer to the most informed, with topics as diverse as the environmental impact of food choices to nutrition labels.
