RulesVixen: ...than change how you think about sugar. It changes how you FEEL about sugar. I have had a lifelong addiction to sugar, refined, empty, dirty filthy sugar. EVen before I finished the book I could feel myself begin to become repulsed by the idea of eating sugar. Attacking the belief that sugar does anything positive at all for me has really been the difference for me. I have "quit sugar" before, in the past using sheer willpower. But I always believed I was missing out by denying myself my "treats." NOW when I think about sugar or eating a candy bar, cup cake, brownie or other I honestly think about the bloaty, overstuffed feeling in the belly, the subsequent energy failure/crash, the cellulite and the daily FATIGUE and spike cycle I have been living. I did have withdrawals, and it was difficult....for only 3 days.
On the day after being without sugar for 3 days I woke up feeling bright, refreshed and energetic. A feeling I have not enjoyed upon waking in YEARS. Food tastes better....my morning oat bran with blueberries, raspberries, banana, chia seeds, almonds and pumpkin seeds tastes incredible now. Refined sugar kills your taste buds! I ate a fresh, homemade taco...

JDRanger: This is a valuable book. However, I have a few issues with it.
First off - if you want to stop eating sugar and junk food you should buy this book and you don’t need to buy Carr’s Emotion Eating. If you have read Emotional Eating you don’t need to read Good Sugar Bad Sugar. They are essentially the same book.
Secondly, I don’t agree that you can kick your sugar addiction without will power as the book suggests. I also don’t buy the claim that all sugary foods don’t taste good. I absolutely ate some “bad sugar” foods because they taste so good.
Third on the list: As many others have stated, there is a lot of repetition and the book comes across as an infomercial.
Fourth - although the book states it as fact, your cravings won’t magically disappear after reading this book. That’s just not realistic.
I would recommend this book or Emotional Eating (not both). He makes a lot of good points and it definitely helped me kick my sugar habit. So, thank you Mr. Carr.

Adrian James: I have struggled with my health/weight for several years and finally admitted to myself that my relationship with sugar wasn't what it was meant to be. I then searched for some books to support me on my journey to begin making the change, and came across this book.
In some ways, it tells me a lot of things what I already know and it's quite repetitive. However, it explains things clearly, positively, properly and I can honestly say I was not expecting something as simple as a book to get me in the right direction. Within days of starting the book I'd stopped eating when I wasn't hungry, sleeping better, eating healthier foods and undoing what has really been the habit of a lifetime.
If you are in a mindset of "I know I have a problem with sugar and I'm ready to work hard to put this right" then this book is a no-brainer and I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. If you're just looking for something that'll help you lose weight in time for the Summer, it's not for you.

Karen H.: I love this book. I’ve struggled with food issues since I was a teenager. I’ve tried so many approaches to solving my problem with food. Then, I found this book. I listened to it and have the book. It’s my bible for stopping the insanity of thinking that the sugar and processed food I was eating gave me something I valued. This book helped me see I’ve been brainwashed into eating foods that caused me to gain weight, develop illnesses and cause me misery. The simple solution is to face reality to what bad sugar is doing and stop eating it. I was convinced and I stopped eating processed carbohydrates and all sugar products. The results have been amazing. I now buy and cook real food, eat as much of it as I want and I’m losing weight. But more importantly my mind is clear, I have lots of energy and I’ve developed a positive attitude. No more guilt, feeling depressed and unable to handle stress. Thank you Allen Carr.

Rozzymoo: I think the aim of this book, apart from giving you lots of useful facts about sugar and health, is to re-write your thinking about sugar. Its very repetitive, almost boring to read, and every reference to BAD SUGAR is always in capitals. Its a reconditioning read. I was waiting all the time for the actual guidance on how to eat, before realising about the re-conditioning. The recommended way of eating is to eat raw food as most of your diet, fruit, uncooked veg, seeds and nuts. So cut out carbs, don't eat much protein, and don't cook veg either. Get your sugar fix from fruit. I think its a good approach, but not very realistic. In family life I'm not likely to sit for a Sunday roast with a chicken leg and lots of uncooked veg whilst they're all eating the cooked version. I'm a very healthy person naturally so am very happy with the salad/fruit/nuts/seeds approach and do like the way it helps you to feel comfortable with not eating rubbish.

Luke: Changed my life, it's been over a year and I'm still choosing to eat healthier, but more over I don't want to eat bad sugar foods at all. I've gone from eating large packets of chocolate buttons, bars of chocolate, packets of biscuits and sweets a week to nothing. For no other reason than I don't want it anymore.
It doesn't work for everyone, unfortunately, if you don't want to change then this book won't and can't force you to. I wanted to stop eating crap foods but found I craved them, I wanted this book to work for me and I think that's key for it to work.
I've seen first hand people read the book, scof at what it says and have nothing change, they still crave bad sugar foods and they're still over weight and getting bigger.
I lost 5stone in 7 months without doing a single bit of exercise, through just choosing to eat good sugar foods. Weight loss has slowed down now, I'm losing about half a stone a month and starting to think about some light exercising to ramp up the weight loss and get fitter.
One of the things I've noticed is I rarely feel hungry, and if I do it's because I haven't eaten in a good 17+ hours.
It wasn't easy at first, I did crave the odd...

J: I thought this book was good at addressing the psychological effects of processed sugar and how it can be toxic to the body. However I didn’t see many scientific sources or accounts from certified nutritionists (Allen Carr is not a nutritionist). The Easy Way approach applies well to quit smoking (because he had first hand experience as an ex smoker), but I found it off putting that this book was published a decade after his death so it’s uncertain if a ghost writer is just reapplying the Easy Way to sugar addiction. There’s a possibility of bias towards a specifically raw vegan diet without sources. I’m not saying that being plant based is good or bad, but most of the book was framed as an opinion and diet culture/ trends change frequently. The multiple mentions of brainwashing and how this book isn’t “brainwashing” was a little odd and doubtful. In summary it’s a great book to strengthen your intuitive eating habits, but some of the specifics on diet need further research from the reader and possible updating as nutritional understanding evolves in the future.

Louisie G: I bought this and Easy Way for Women to Lose Weight, which I learned about from my friend who is trying to quit smoking. I didn't agree with 100% of what he said which is why I gave it 4 stars but I now understand that I am addicted to sugar. I can look back on my life and see instances where this is 100% true. And I agree that sugar is not my friend, but an enemy which has affected my life in many negative ways. I can't say that I don't think that cake, cookies and ice cream do not taste good but for the past 3 weeks I have truly had no desire to have any of it. I feel that this book has set me on a positive path. I really think that I will stay off sugar for the rest of my life because a stupid dish of ice cream is just not worth the heartache it causes and the stress of wanting more, more, more....... I have more peace of mind without it, and I really feel this way deep inside and am not waiting to get to my goal weight so that I can be done with the diet, as I've done so many times before. I prefer to not be enslaved to "foods" that don't even nourish the body.
