Aleratec 240131 Disc Repair Kit - Revive Damaged DVDs and CDs

Darryl: For those of you who still believe in discs, weather it's Cd's, Dvd's or even gaming discs. I had one similar to this a long time ago but when I went to search for it, I think this company had bought them out because it was exactly the same as my previous unit. This is good for repairing discs, now keep in mind, it's not going to fix those real deep scratches but if it's slightly deep, it will/should take care of it. I have used it for all my discs, probably for about 15 yrs. Don't overuse it because overuse will be hard on a disc. But when used properly, it's great. The kit includes everything you need - all-in-one.

John Clifton: Some people didn't have the luck that I did with this machine , I followed the instructions , and had to repeat some steps , but it cleaned up some pretty rough DVD 's that weren't playing well . This did the trick , I had no other cheaper options , except to replace the DVD ( if available ) and or a much more expensive repair unit .

TRIPOD: I had a very rare collectible DVD that has a very nasty scratch near the center. I was not able at least to make a copy when I remembered that I had bought this Aleratec machine a few years ago ! I tried it, first I made 3 REPAIR cycles, it was not enough, I made 3 BUFFER cycles to lighten the scratch then 3 more REPAIR cycles and the scratch was almost gone. I was now able to make a security copy just incase ! If you know what you're doing and how to use it, this machine is terrific !

Kurgan: I only refrain from giving this product five stars because of what I've read about the plastic gears and motor wearing out after so many cycles and the high cost of replacing the supplies (which seem to make re-buying the whole unit the more cost effective solution). So there is a built-in "lifespan" to this product. So depending upon what you use it for, it may last through dozens of lightly damaged/dirty discs or it may only fix a few really bad cases. For the price however that may be worth it, depending upon what you're trying to save. I don't have small children at home, but I do have a lot of used discs and I do find my discs smudged sometimes by family or friends who mishandle them (or even my own clumsiness at times).

However, that said, of all the "cd/dvd repair" kits I've used over the years, this seems to have the best reputation. It can't work miracles however. While it brought a visibly scratched up, non-working Xbox game "back to life like new" and even makes the surface of worn discs look "like new" it didn't fix a scratched PC game I got on amazon, nor did it fix an old DVD that had a simple "half moon" shaped scuff on the disc surface, even after repeated...

Daniel Harkess: The Aleratec 240131 is a CD/DVD cleaning and repair system that works well. I've saved several DVDs by using the repair function of the Aleratec, and several other DVDs just needed cleaning to get them to work.

There are three levels of maintenance. The first one is Disc Cleaning. The Aleratec comes with cleaning fluid and two cleaning heads. The second level is Disc Repair. Likewise, it comes with repair protective solution and two repair heads. The third level, and most drastic, is Disc Buffing. It comes with two buffing units.

(A head is a cylindrical device about 1 ¾" in diameter and about ¾" tall with a cloth-type material ring on top of it. The material varies with each type of head. A buffing unit is the top half of a head.)

From the User Guide:
"It is generally recommended to begin with the Disc Cleaning procedure first,
and if necessary move to the more intensive procedures."

To operate the Aleratec, first decide how damaged the disc in question is. If it has sustained minor damage, then just a Disc Cleaning may be in order. If after cleaning the disc it is not sufficiently restored, then try the Disc Repair Procedure.
