laurie: I bought this book for my mom for mother's day this year. My mom has dementia (diagnosed 2 years ago), so I was being very careful to find a gift that she could relate to and enjoy.
One of her main symptoms is aphasia (inability to speak or understand speech). With that in mind, getting her a book might seem like a bad idea. However, when I came across Dr. Seuss' "You're Only Old Once!" I immediately knew I'd found exactly what was looking for.
While she was initially confused as to what to do with it, mom's reaction to the book was better than I ever could have anticipated. I read the book to her, and she was completely immersed in our activity together. The best part about buying this book was being able to create this memory, that now holds a very special place in my heart.
