david pavie: I bought this for a large rec room in the basement. The 3 stage filter has a large surface area as well as the optional high voltage steralizer which can be turned off if you are worried about ozone. I tried it and I did not smell any ozone. I like that the pre filter and carbon filter can be washed and the heppa filter can be vacuumed to extend the life. It also has a light sensor so that it can go into a quiet mode at night. The unit is quite thin and can be place along a wall as it draws ain in the front and shoots the clean air out of the top of the unit.

John D.: BOUGHT THIS TO REPLACE A HONEYWELL HFD323 unit that finally died...

This unit has lots of good features, some not so good, and bad ones.

GOOD THINGS:
1) Its fairly lightweight.
2) Runs very quiet except when in turbo mode.
3) Prefilter screen keeps most dust off the carbon filter.
4) Power usage is excellent compared to say a Honeywell unit.
5) Auto sense system seems to easily detect " BAD AIR" and alert you to that.

NOT SO GOOD:
1) User manual stated the LEDS were auto dimming based on ambient light.... NOT !
2) Will not restart after a power outage.
3) Having the air exit out the top actually caused it to push odors and dust around MORE
compared to a rear exit. Better to have front inlet and rear outlet, which can only work well IF they get rid of side inlets.
4) Leds will ONLY turn off if put into sleep mode. Needs to be redesigned with another button having say four levels ... OFF, LOW, MEDIUM AND HIGH BRIGHTNESS. Sure you can cover with tape, but then cant see whats happening in day time.

THE BAD: ( Showed up when turned OFF at night )
Worked perfectly for 14 days.
ON DAY 15 when started up in the morning...

Nathan: I am very happy with this air purifier. I previously had one of the small ones from Germ Guardian and I hated how loud it was. This Winix purifier is way quieter on its second-highest setting (level 3) and it moves a lot more air. I usually have it on level 1 and don't even notice it, even though I'm someone who is very easily distracted by noises. I can even tune out level 3 some of the time.

Even though this thing gets SUPER quiet when it goes into sleep mode (which will automatically happen when you turn your lights out), it's too noticeable to have in my bedroom while I sleep. It's almost inaudible when it's in sleep mode, but since my room is dead quiet at night, I can still hear it. The one LED light it has on in sleep mode is also too bright to keep in my bedroom, so at night, I just move it to a different room. If you enjoy white noise while you sleep though, this thing is totally fine to keep in your bedroom at night.

When my air really needs to be cleaned (such as when I smell cigarette smoke from my neighbours), I bump it up to level 4 (turbo), which is its highest level. It is much louder than level 3, but the sound is still not nearly as annoying as my...

Después de este aparato, lo primero que se elimina es la alergia, sientes como hay un ambiente mas limpio. Existen fabricas que liberan gases que muchas veces llegan a los domicilios y el ambiente dentro de casa se siente menos pesado. La opcion automatica, es espectacular, el sólo decide la velocidad dependiendo la contaminación y cuando se apaga la luz el mismo se pone en dormir. El nivel de ruido solo lo notarias en el nivel 4 (Máxima) pero realmente sería momentos muy puntuales con esa velocidad, pero la mayor parte del tiempo es nivel1 y no lo notas.

6 weeks in and the purifier is definitely reducing the dust in the living room. I have cleaned the filter elements a couple times and noticed a couple issues. The screen has two snap-in features halfway up the sides. If you don’t ensure they are pushed in fully, dust will bypass the screen, as shown by a gray build-up on the carbon filter at those two areas. Those snaps also cause a problem when removing a dirty screen. The screen vibrates as you pull it out and the snaps disengage with some force. The dust on the screen falls off and makes quite a mess (see photo). You cannot stop this from happening.
Other than these, the purifier is working well.

It's been a week and the dust level in the living room is noticeably less, as seen by the much fewer particle count on the surfaces. It's also helping in the adjacent dining room. It's been on speed 3 24/7, only on Turbo when I vacuum. I've already rinsed the prescreen filter and used a damp cloth to wipe the light accumulation from the mesh on the carbon filter.

GinoGino: I've been looking for a new air purifier for almost a year now, doing research here and there trying to find a unit that meets all the requirments I'm looking for. I need a unit that's for a larger room, has an auto feature, has good priced replacement filters, and looks good to match my home decor. A recent 80,000 acre fire hastened my research due to the thick blanket of smoke that blanket the area (and still is) every morning. With all things considered, the Winix 5500-2 met all my requiements.

The unit arrived promptly and unpackaging was an ease. I literally had it set up ans running in about 5 minutes. The body is a hard, matte black plastic that feels sturdy and durable. The front panel is easy to remove, and secures to the unit via a clever magnetic clasp that is secure, yet simple to remove to access your prefilter for bi weekly cleaning and hepa/carbon filter replacement. There are 3 filters in total, and they fit snugly inside the filter chamber, amd ate secured in with the prefilter that snaps firmly into place.
The control panel at the top is intuituve and user friendly. The buttons are clearly marked and visual ques explain what each button does taking out...
