T. Nunley: Packed my son off to college recently. He calls me and said the new laptop we sent him with does not have an ethernet port. OHH, major fail for ole Dad. I didn't check that. No worries; I quickly ordered this USB to Ethernet adapter and shipped it to him. He received it and told me "Hey, it works great. It is a lot faster than the Wifi in the dorm. Now I can play games"
Doh! Keep your grades up or else!!!

A. CustomerA. Customer: My wifi router was having problems, so I had to switch to Ethernet cable. My laptop doesn't have an Ethernet port, but with this adapter I am able to have internet access using one of my USB ports. I plugged the TP-Link adapter into my USB 3.0 port, the drivers installed and I was able to get online at the full speed of my internet service (see image for screenshot of the speed test results).
BUT it's not perfect...
- Using the InstalledDriverList app I am able to see that when I plugged in the adapter that 2 drivers were installed, one named AX88179 and one named AX88179A. Windows is using driver AX88179A which is the driver for USB-C. Windows should be using driver AX88179 since this is a USB 3 adapter. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, but that didn't work.
- I tested the adapter in one of my USB 2 ports to see if it was backwards-compatible, and it is not. Internet performance was slow, very slow, or didn't work at all. This adapter should have a driver that allows it to be fully backwards-compatible with USB 2. This would allow users, like me, to move the adapter to a USB 2 port so that I could plug my mouse into the one USB 3 port that...

Studio421: Got this to use on a usb-c laptop for PXE boot. Well long story short, it did not work. It does work when you plug it in and use it on a computer/laptop once you get to login screen. I am not sure why the power is not supplied on the item until then, but it does. So once it booted into bios and told the machine to PXE boot, and rebooted. The device was not powering on or getting signal at all. I have others in my office and they al work in the PXE boot area. So I am not sure what is the issue with this one. So, I will use it as a "hardline" connection on the previously already imaged devices and use something else to get the deployment done. I only gave it 4 stars due to the PXE issue, but for all other uses, it works as intended.

Austin Bookworm: I moved on to a new Mac Book Pro with all the USB C connections so I needed a hard wired Ethernet connection that I leave at home and just plug into my Mac Book Pro when I'm home from traveling for work. This does the job and for $15, it does it even better. I leave it attached to my CAT6 cable and just plug in the USB-C connector and I'm online at 1 Gb. It makes a difference when Time Machine backups commence.
I love the little blinky light showing Ethernet traffic.
