Marc: I couldn't get a decent wireless signal in my home office, which was one story and 75 feet away from my wireless router. I changed routers. Several times. I purchased range extenders. Several of them. I bought a powerline adapter. I had service people come out to diagnose the problem. I changed service providers. I moved things around. I changed settings. I learned more than I ever wanted to about the inner workings of these devices that do nothing more than broadcast and receive signals. Nothing worked. I was averaging 2mbps down and experiencing constant signal drops. It was inefficient, time consuming, and more than anything, infuriating. I was running out of options and decided that perhaps I should change the wireless card in my laptop. But my laptop is only a year old and the card I have is well-rated, so I was skeptical. Then I found this device. I didn't have high hopes and I was at the end of my rope. I plugged this puppy in and BAM! 20mbps. Just like that. And it's been kicking as* for a week now with no hiccups. Logan Daw: It worked okay for around 9 months, with increasingly occurring disconnects / lag spikes.

Now, almost a year after my purchase, it's almost completely stopped working. I'm surprised I could even write this review.

The device constantly disconnects from the network (no other devices do this, even when they are much farther away than this device is). I have it less than 50ft. away from my access point. The LED always either completely shuts off or starts slowly rhythmically flashing. It will not reconnect without unplugging/reconnecting it several times. When it does work, my ping in online games often jumps from its normal 25ms to well over 1000ms.

Downloading the driver from the TP-LINK website and reinstalling it has done nothing.

I am a competitive gamer who can unfortunately only use wifi. I have a tournament tomorrow that I may not be able to participate in because of this issue. This device has been a huge disappointment. Please do not buy it.

EDIT 4/26/2015:

So about two months ago, TP-LINK express-shipped me a replacement for free. Ever since I got the replacement, I have had no issues. Very rarely do I disconnect....

MICHAEL T BLAIR: The Powerlink Hermes worked as well as this, but.... I have been through 3 of them so I had to try something different (all broke within a couple of months!).

This adapter uses the same basic chipset (realtek 8192). I really hope that it will prove reliable because it is very, very good.

PROS:
This adapter has allowed me to connect to distant networks at better speeds than many other dongles tried.

The reception is much better than 2 rt2800 based adapters I have (EDUP EP-MS8515) & a RT3072 adapter (widemac SL-3504N). I can even connect at a useful speed to the wifi at the coffee shop down the street (3 blocks but almost line of sight).

CONS:
The only con I can come up after using it for a couple of weeks is that I had some issues getting it to work in Linux. This is contrary to other reviews here - and it may be due to my own inexperience with Linux so please take this with a grain of salt.

It's working but it took me a while to get the right driver in Ubuntu. I'm not sure what the other review is talking about when they say it took them to the website to install drivers when they plugged it in.... If it didn't...
