But it's always the children who tear the heart. But there is good in everything bringing families together is the best thing.

BananaTricky: So here we are, the sixteenth book in the series. It's autumn 1941 and the bombs are falling on London. Young Freddie Hackett is employed to run around London delivering top secret messages by government departments. One night whilst on his way to deliver a message, Freddie witnesses a murder, and then only minutes later delivers his message to the killer ,a man who looks like the actor Victor Mature, but with deep lines in his face. The police don't believe Freddie's story, especially when there is no evidence of a body, so Freddie approaches Maisie Dobbs, detective extraordinaire to whom he has delivered messages in the past, to help him.
Maisie is having troubles of her own, her romantic liaison with Mark Scott, an American diplomat/spy is rendered increasingly difficult by the secrets they must each keep about their respective war work. Maisie is engaged by the government to vet potential SOE operatives (spies), to give them the best chance of surviving when parachuted into occupied France . It's nerve-wracking work, especially knowing that the life of a radio operator in France is measured in weeks. Then there's her step-mother Brenda who is strongly disapproving of...

P. Hoag: Maisey once again disects a crime and puts the pieces back together in order. Not much has changed in her work life. The fact that she is a mother now has not kept her from her duties. This is where the story is beginning to unravel. The child receives as much attention as a favorite dog at this point from Maisey. Her boyfriend should not expect anything in the way of love, attention and time spent with him.. Though she excels in her work she has little capacity for the most important people in her life.

Dash: The writer is observant and sensitive to people's foibles. You may think Maisie Dobbs' series follows a certain reliable plot but there are always surprises and each book leaves you with interesting things, esp. the psychology of human functioning in times of stress, to think about, this one in particular.

Amazon Customer: As usual, the reader is taken into the times and lives of the characters. I alsways learn something about human nature and about the intrigue of war. Such a good series.

Patto: It’s wartime in Europe, and as always Jacqueline Winspear vividly captures the atmosphere of a London besieged by daily bombing and full of traumatized citizens and soldiers.
Masie Dobbs still has her inquiry agency, but she’s equally occupied with secret assignments that can’t be talked about. The focus in this book is on secret excursions into France by British agents — and the elaborate recruiting, screening, and training systems that supported the operation. Maisie is a mere cog in the machinery of this operation — but she hates being a part of sending young people into so much danger.
The plot has a high emotional temperature, as people die, see horrors, fall in love, and make difficult personal sacrifices for England.
A boy who runs messages for Intelligence happens to witness a murder. No one but Maisie believes him. Maisie takes on this unpaid case with her usual single-minded doggedness, despite the fact that her mind is also occupied with her lover, her adopted daughter, and her secret war work.
The theme of fear runs throw out the narrative, thus the title. There was plenty to fear with Hitler at the door and the future so...

Sarah G Kincaid: Outstanding story telling, satisfying mystery, and a love story—several love stories.
Interesting examination of the way a child might process trauma. I’m wondering if child psychology was truly as advanced in the 1940s as Jacqueline Winspear describes it.
I heartily recommend The Consequences of Fear.
