Thomasina: I am reviewing this book a year after purchasing it, so I have used it many times over the past year. The recipes are simple and hard to mess up. As others mentioned, most recipes assume you have standard staples in your spice rack like garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, etc. I saw complaints about that, but if you don't have those standard seasonings in your possession, your food is not going to taste good anyway!
There aren't any pictures as others mentioned except at the beginning of the chapters, but most of the recipes are simple anyway, so you don't need a picture of what chili or drumsticks look like as finished products. My cookbooks with lots of glossy photos are much more expensive, so I'm perfectly happy without the pictures. My only small complaint is that the book doesn't stay open while you're using it unless you place something heavy on it, so a ring-bound version might be nice, but those usually allow the last few pages to slip off the ring anyway, so I guess it's a wash. The book is thin, doesn't take up much space and fits nicely with the rest of my cookbooks. Overall, I am very satisfied with the recipes in this book and have made many delicious meals...

Lee E. Walkowski: The first recipe I tried: Enchilada Soup. It has quickly became a family favorite, and it's easy enough my 13-year-old son has made it without my assistance - twice! The other recipes are equally as easy, but the Enchilada Soup is a family staple now. It's still no complete beginner's book, though - you need to know your measurements and conversions already, some recipes have a harder time getting ingredients, and some recipes have quite the list on them and call for several steps - but if my kid can tackle them and not get burnt out or frustrated, I think an adult will do just fine.
A few recommendations:
- Anytime a recipe calls for shredding cooked meat by hand, just plop it in a mixing bowl with a little liquid from the crockpot, pull out a hand mixer, and rip it through.
- Chicken breast is easier to shred than chicken thighs, shreds finer and with fewer to no clumps, and soaks up surrounding flavors beautifully. I recommend substituting chicken breast any time a recipe in the book calls for chicken thighs.
- Don't be afraid to ballpark estimate. We found out that many recipes have a flexible leeway - if you can't find the can size you need, going a for a...

naturalmama: I have a hard time buying "regular" cookbooks while working around nut allergies, lactose intolerance, and a preference for eating gluten-free. After looking through the sample of this book, I decided to take a chance and have not been disappointed.
The author does a great job of calling out allergy swaps where they are able to be made, and there are also a lot of recipes that meet our needs without making adjustments. I have found the cook times to be accurate, and the dishes are generally flavorful and easy to assemble. After having spent the last few years cooking mostly with an Instant Pot, this book has been helpful in getting me reacquainted with a slow cooker for the nights when I'm not home to cook dinner due to running kids to activities.
As others have noted, these recipes don't really have five ingredients, but more like five main ingredients. Things like spices and water don't count toward the five. Personally, I don't find this to be a deterrent because most of the meals I make have longer ingredient lists than this, anyway, but I can see how some might not be totally excited about it. Also, she uses frozen mirepoix as a main ingredient in a lot of...
