My husband asked me to buy this so here's his review:
I'm a mechanical engineer. Nearly twenty years ago I designed a hoist for our two kayaks and my design is mechanically identical to this hoist from Amazon, except my design doesn't have the safety brake. From some reviews I read I was a bit skeptical so I went to my local hardware store and bought the same, exact parts as before for two more kayaks we bought this season. But the hardware store parts were over double the cost of this hoist so I took a chance and ordered it to compare.
Out of the box it looked capable of the job so I set the hardware store parts to the side. I glanced at the instructions to get familiar then set to work. Installation was easy enough. I agree with other reviewers that the supplied rope didn't seem adequate so I used 1/4" nylon braided rope, 50' per kayak, from the hardware store since the same type of rope has worked flawlessly all this time.
My new boats hoisted up more easily than with my hoist design since the pulley diameter on this hoist is larger than the hardware store pulleys. The safety brake feature worked flawlessly and makes it very easy to...

Keith:
This is a nice hoist that is simple enough to fit and seems nice and sturdy but my problem is that you need to be directly under the lock for it to reliably lock when releasing the cord, this is not ideal when used with a large kayak as I have but have still made it work.
I am using this for an 11 foot fishing kayak that weighs 38kg/84lb apparently and it holds it fine, I have added some extra straps to hooks on the ceiling as I do not fully trust the lock. It seems to release quite easily when the cord on the cleat is bumped sometimes so want the additional peace of mind.
If you are able to pull the cord directly under the lock on this then it is great.

Rob McLaughlin: It’s a well built product, it’s a two person job but generally it’s not hard to install if you can follow the instructions

Brent Goertzen: This is an excellent product. Instructions could be a little clearer but once I watched to install video it clear up any confusion. Works amazing!

Steve G.:
Good news! The instructions have been updated. They are slightly more clear (the first one I received was defective- missing a pulley- and the replacement had new instructions)
The main issue is orienting the non-lifting pulley brackets. I recommend laying it all out on the floor before installing to save yourself some aggravation. Watch the video. Then the installation should be relatively straightforward
The product itself works well and seems dependable. The kayak now hangs above my car, which speaks to my comfort with the storage rack.
The first unit was defective (poor QA- how do you not notice a missing pulley?) and it took about 10 days for the company to ship a replacement, while they sent me a message every other day to rate them. Assuming you get a working product the first time, there should be no problem

So I've got the pro and the non-pro version of this product. I can tell you hands down, the Pro is worth the $5-10 premium.
Build-quality on both is fine, but the included rope on the pro(nylon) is much nicer than the cheap polypropylene included on the standard.
Then there's the issue of the center strap. I'm not sure if other manufactures lose sight of this fact, but Kayak hulls are tapered. Thus, if not adjusted just right, the straps tend to "wander". The Pro version's center strap fixes this problem. No more worrying if the boat is going to slip out due to slippery straps.
If there were one thing I'd change, is possibly how the auto-brake system engages. As is, two metal tabs kinda jam into the rope. I'm no engineer, but to me, it seems that after a little while this could fray/cut the cord.

Ruben H.: el producto es buen en general, pero a los pocos meses de uso, las bandas se reventaron provocando que el kayak se cayera y dañara. Sugiero cambiar las bandas por unas de mejor calidad.
