anonymous: Students can enjoy this book even if they don't know English. "Is it a cat egg?" "No." "Is it a dog egg?" "No." "Is it a fox egg?" "Yes." My students could understand these basic words and thought it was hilarious.

"Big Egg" by Molly Coxe Lexile: br
"Big Egg" by Molly Coxe is a fun story of a hen that realizes one of her eggs isn't quite right, and so, she goes searching for the owner of this mysterious big egg.
The predictable text and comical pictures clues help children anticipate the dialog as Hen makes each new stop.
Some examples include:
• "Is it a cat egg" "No," says Cat
• "Is it a cow egg" "No," say Cow
Then hen reaches the crafty Mr. Fox and her journey goes a bit topsy-turvey for the next few pages of the story.
Ms. Coxe is the author of many early readers and some of her other Step Into Reading titles include:
• Hot Dog
• Cat Traps
According to Ms. Coxe bio she is currently working on series of Early Readers for BraveMouse Readers the simple books will feature each of the short vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u)
Personally, I found "Big Egg" by Molly Coxe to be a fun way to introduce young children to the pleasure of reading and great way to boost early reading confidence.
I look forward to adding more of Molly Coxe's books to our home library.

Angela: My son has been having a little difficulty reading. He started kindergarten this year, and he has been a little resistent to reading some of the early readers the school has sent home with him. To begin with, he has severe myopia, so it's challenging for him to see the words. But, more importantly, the early readers the school has sent home are really boring. They mainly consist of things like "Dog is Sleepy. The dog gets up. The dog sees cat." He just isn't interested. So, when we pull out the school's early readers, his response has been, "not that again!" I know he'll eventually have to read stuff that he find boring in school. But, right now, I want him to learn to love reading. Big Egg does the trick! The words are nice and big, so he doesn't get frustrated by not being able to see the words. And, there is a cute little story. He especially loves yelling, "SQUAWK" when the big egg hatches. I would love to find more early readers like Big Egg. Any ideas? :)

S. Tho: I received this book today. My daughter seems to really like it. She is about to make 5 years old. She cannot read it on her own as yet, although she can sound and blend out the c-v-c words including "dog", "hen" and "cat".
I would buy this book again. The story line is not boring at all. It is actually like a movie. The hen goes around to different animals to find out who the big egg belongs to. The hen finally comes to a fox and the fox claims ownership of the egg, but as he was at the table, looking like he was preparing to eat, the egg Big egg cracked and the big chicken emerged with a big "SQUAWK!". The fox was afraid. The hen eventually took home the big egg and her real eggs and she loved them all.
My daughter likes this book. I would recommend it.
