bcurran3: I read this and loved it when I was a kid (10-12 yo). So I read it to my kids (6, 8 , and 10) at 55 yo and still loved it. Didn't know there was a sequel (Zia) until I bought it. Looking forward to reading that too.

Susan K: I read this book aloud to my grands ages 11 and 8. We read before bed and in the car driving to activities. I was amazed at how attentive they were and how much they wanted to get to the end which we did in 31/2 days. Even my husband enjoyed it!

Reading_TamishlyReading_Tamishly: “…still I would have felt the same way, for animals and birds are like people, too, though they do not talk the same or do the same things. Without them the earth would be an unhappy place.”

The book is so short with the shortest chapters!

If you like the premise of Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, you can definitely pick up this book for a younger version without any mystery to solve, of course.

While this is a story of a little girl getting lost in the wild and trying to survive, you can also expect to explore the wilderness and the wildness of the beings that thrives in water and coastal environments.

The writing is so accessible for anyone starting from the age of eight. The chapters are really short. You will be swimming in the world of the character living amidst a natural wild environment. I find it quite endearing and refreshing.

The story ends well. Everything was so vivid when I read the book. The writing is amazing. However, I wish the book was a little longer.

Yes, the book is based on a true story.

Andrew: When I was younger, this story was one of the ones my family would listen to on our commutes into and out of the city. It's a great story of about a girl left behind on her home island, after her tribe has left, filled with exploration, loss, survival, and curiosity. It really does feel like a firsthand account (Although if I remember correctly, this story is based loosely on the story of a girl that this did happen to, but the story was written by another person, who did not have contact with said individual. Regardless, feels authentic anyway), and the narrator for the story really makes it real. It feels like it is someone telling you the story of their life, rather than just some narrator covering the adventures of someone else, like they are there in the room with you.

Definitely a worthwhile purchase, I've remembered the story for over ten years, and it still makes me smile when I hear it.

eppingstrider: We find ourselves on the Island of the Blue Dolphins with Karana, her brother, family and tribe, living as a native people would. However the red sails of an Aleut ship are in sight, and knowing that this has caused trouble in the past, Karana’s father takes care in his negotiations with them for the hunting of otters in their waters. Despite his care things turn bad, and then worse. A different ship arrives, offering to take the remainder of the tribe to safety in the east, but Karana’s brother turns back to fetch something he has forgotten, and Karana leaps from a canoe, which is taking her from the island to the ship, to find him.

What follows is the tale of Karana’s life fending for herself on a deserted island. There are friendships and fights, hardships and successes. She overcomes her superstitions and her fears, and shows her resourcefulness and patience.

The tale is beautifully written, and whilst not paying too much attention to detail, I felt that there are enough hints for anyone with the misfortune to be stranded on a desert island to make the best of their opportunities. I expect these days it is read in schools with plenty of additional material...
