WesZ: This is a genuine Starrett center punch. Top of the line, top quality. Spend the few extra bucks and have a lifetime of use. I have had contact with several off-brand auto punches in the past and the would fail on me. After a while, they just quit snapping the punch. Never had a Starrett fail.

S. COUCH: Starret have always been associated in the engineering world as manufacturing great quality tools and equipment................... BUT WHAT WENT WRONG HERE......... ??
The punch is made really well, really nice quality as expected BUT the actual task of performing what its designed for is a joke............. I used it on a piece of timber and it hardly marked it ? it would definately not even scratch metal......... oh dear Starret, you let me down...
I have 3 other auto punches all set to use for different tasks and they all function as intended. This is like a wet blanket when it comes to performance...

Mine: Don't buy this expecting to use it on hardened steel for large projects. It's a compact punch for smaller scale, light duty use. It's slightly smaller than a tube of chapstick and 4" long. Works great on aluminum, brass, copper, or soft steel that requires a small, precise dimple for a small diameter hole.
If you're needing a punch for a 1/2" drill bit on carbon steel, buy the 18C. It's much larger and has a more robust spring. Both tools are exceptionally well made and Starrett will replace them with no questions asked in the event of failure.

AH: Does exactly what is expected - automatic punch with an screw adjustment for the stroke / impact.
Starrett is a trusted brand, and this tool is well made and should last a long time.

LouieDad: Works well but is a bit finicky to get reset for next punch. Appears well made and easy to disassemble / replace the tip.

JPH: This gets a solid five stars because it really is perfect. The "wind up" is very, very smooth with a nice and short throw, which helps keep it on the spot while pressing on it. The resulting action is quick, firm, and surprisingly powerful considering how effortless the "wind up" is. It makes me wonder if they are somehow cheating the conservation of momentum and energy... Oh yeah and the knurling and overall look is second to none. It feels super sweet to hold! Given all of this, plus the fact that it only costs as much as 6 lattes, plus the fact that it's still made in the USA, don't even bother to waste your money on a cheaper import (which are only cheaper by about 1/2 as much - we're still in the "impulse dollars" range here folks...).
