Jarno Käsnänen: Honestly just disappointed. Looks the part, but crunchy to use. Tried to do a bit of deburring and extra greasing, but some of the sloppy tolerances and how the spring is interacting with the mechanism are probably mostly to blame. Not nearly as bad as my 18C-model though, that thing feels janky af. The striking mechanism doesn't work 1/15 times or so, same as with my other two other Starretts.
I honestly can't tell a significant quality upgrade to my cheapo Chinese automatic centre punch. Well, that one hasn't misfired yet actually.
I had assumed people raving about Starrett quality would mean something, but not with this product.

Allan L. Bazinet: Bulletproof construction quality, nice size in the hand, good point, nice solid impact, a joy to use. I use this for hardwoods, a task for which the 18A is in my opinion perfectly suited.

Tyler Helble: Great punch for wood or light metal. For hardened steel you would need 18C. My only complaint is these things must sit for a long time before they are shipped. My 18C was full of rust and had surface rust. It also has many metal shavings inside. No metal in the 18A but full of rust as well. 5-10 minutes is needed to disassemble clean, and oil and these punches are flawless. The 2 I bought I wouldn’t even use them until they are detailed and cleaned up. If it wasn’t for this, 5 stars!

Michael J.: I was disappointed with this punch. I had read that these punches are a must have for metal work. It works fine on aluminum because it’s soft. But for steel not so good and stainless even worse. You cock it by pressing down on your material and trip it to release the pin and mark your spot. However, the spring is not very strong and it barely marks your spot. And worst of all it was about thirty dollars. Sadness

Francesco: Non capisco perché alcuni clienti si sono lamentati, per me è eccellente come da grandi aspettative, anzi, fa proprio un bel buco anche con poca pressione (su legno morbido).
Funziona bene ed ha un prezzo (in offerta) ancora più basso di molti altri equivalenti di marche sconosciute.
Se lo beccate in offerta consigliatissimo, è proprio un gran bell'oggetto.
