DJkat: This book is great for a beginning bird watcher because you don't need to know much about birds to use it. All of the other books I looked at, you first need to know if the bird is a sparrow, wren, chickadee, etc. As a beginner, I have no idea - but I do know what the bird looks like and what color it is. Pictures are great and I love that it only has the birds seen in NJ, cool mini state maps tell whether you'll see the bird all year, summer, winter or during migration. All very helpful for the novice. Bought 2 more as gifts.

Ayla1995: Purchased as a house warming gift for first time home owners. Saw a wide range of birds and didn't know much about them. They're enjoying marking which birds they've seen and are looking forward to Spring!

Our Households Reviews: The Birds of New Jersey Field Guide is a great little book and a must have for identifying birds that visit your backyard or birds you might see while out sightseeing.
I live in a very scenic area that is rather dense with forestry so we get a lot of different birds with the changes in seasons, many of which I have no idea what kind of bird they are, so I thought it would be a good idea to pick up a book to identify the unknown birds and to learn about our feathered friends so I know what kind of food to provide them.
I have to say that I am glad I purchased this particular book because it provides full-page, color photos of the birds which makes it easy to identify birds. What I enjoy the most about this book is its easy to use format. You do not need to know the birds classification to look it up to identify it, rather, you simply turn to the color tabs to search for the bird in question. For example if you see a yellow bird and would like to know what kind of bird it is, all you need to do is search through the yellow tabbed pages to identify the bird.
The book is 324 pages, with gloss cover/ binding, and it gives good basic details on the birds listed such...

Tina: I have now brought 4 copies of this book from Amazon. com and I treasure and use almost daily my own copy, which was a housewarming gift from a friend.
I moved into New Jersey in 2004, and hung up a bird feeder, which was also a gift. Birds responded aplenty but I knew only a few of them. My friend had this guide written and illustrated for the birds of her state, but she knew there was one that cover other states so she sent me the one for my area. She also knew that I didn't know a lot about birds so she sent me the guide she knew even I could use.
You don't need to know anything about a bird, all you have to do is see it. This guide is devided by colors, so if the bird you're looking for is mostly gray, just open to the illustrations of mostly grey birds, find a picture of yours and start reading about it. All birds are shown in color photos and both males and females are shown. Same goes for any color bird from mostly white to mostly black and every color in between.
The book is spacific to the state you're in so it's small, and can be kept quite handy by a window or door or any other observation point. It is also well constructed, mine is still in good...

Happy customer: I’ve bought my mom this book TWICE (after she left the first one in the rain and couldn’t find a comparable one so she continued to use the ruined one). The birds are sorted by color, and if they have two main colors, it will appear in both color categories. It makes identifying birds easy. Descriptions are easy to understand and well-written. It’s also a small book (size of a hand) so it’s easy to take with you places, but the font isn’t too small.
