Smart Garage Door Opener with Aladdin Connect: Genie ALKT1-R

JD: Installed this product in about twenty minutes. Placed the control box near the garage opener since there has to be a AC power plug within 5 feet. Connected this garage controller in parallel with the one I already had installed. Works great and I get a notification on my phone whenever the garage door is opened or close no matter whether I am home or away. Can open and close remotely using the app as well. Highly recommend.

rje_nc: Added this remote after installing a new Genie garage door opener. Installation was easier than I expected, watching the install video before I started helped. The only issue I had was the unit did not initially connect to my home Wi-Fi. Changing my phone wi-fi from the 5GHz to the 2.4GHz wi-fi signal seemed to then allow the unit to connect. I then returned my phone to the 5GHz channel.

It's nice to no longer wonder if I remembered to closed the garage when I leave the house.

M R.: TLDR; Works well and much happier with this solution over the originally installed Q competitor. The scenario functions (both schedule and timer) are much more advanced in the Aladdin product, in addition to the Alexa integration not available in the other.

Bought the competing Q product first, as it was $20 cheaper (and then realized it was only $5 difference after I bought the mount for it). While that product was a simpler install (pair it as if another remote), it did not connect to Alexa - only controlled via app. I don’t always have my phone in hand so voice control via Alexa is where I see the largest benefits of a “smart” home. After realizing the price was $5 difference I unplugged the other and bought the Aladdin. My door opener is a newer Genie installed last year.

The initial setup for both products is very similar. I recommend that you setup the app and complete the linking prior to hardware install. Once the two devices are synced, you can unplug and then mount. The pairing was stored even though it was almost 2 weeks in between the pairing and final install. Bruce B: The ONLY reason I gave it only 4 stars it the not very easy setup if using a phone with a broadband internet connection. To explain:
The unit requires that (after you install the app on your phone) you must FIRST set up the Wi-Fi. It does this by having the app on your phone try to connect to the unit using a 'private' IP address. It kept timing out. So after a bunch of trials I figured out because their 'private' IP address had no Internet access my phone was defaulting to using the broadband connection. (Very smart phone). I simply disabled my broadband on my phone and then completed the setup pretty easily. Now if I would have done this with my tablet (which has no broadband connection) it probably would have worked fine the first time. The instructions should be updated to specify if you are setting up on a phone with broadband internet, and the phone defaults to that if the local wi-fi has no internet connection, then you must first disable the broadband on your phone temporarily. My android phone is running the latest version of Android so that may be a new function which would not impact older phones.
