Powerful ChainDrive 550 Garage Door Opener by Genie - Get the Job Done Right!

Powell: This opener reinforced my like for Genie openers, of which I've bought quite a few over the years (in additional to Craftsman and Chamberlin, both of which I like less because they don't last as long). This was easy to install and set up, with very good instructions, complete hardware for every possible contingency, and good operating instructions. The opener is also amazingly quiet and works well. I highly recommend it. Great price on Amazon, too, in contrast to big-box and other hardware stores which wanted quite a bit more for this opener.

Kastrioti: I read another comment saying something similar, but I will reiterate. I too wanted to replace an old motor and thought I can save the trouble of changing chain and wires. I was wrong as this one has a different chaing system. I am glad I changed it and now it is all new. I had a little hard time to install it at first, then took a deep breath and read the instructions and it went very smooth. It is quite as stated and looks great. So far so good. Can't beat the price.

Programming the down and up is soo easy and straight forward. The rest is a breeze.

Lenny: I called a garage door repair and installation company to fix what I had. They wanted $99 just to come out. I heard it was an easy project so I decided to buy this & install it myself. I'm glad I did. I did not touch the wiring, springs or pully's & cables, but replaced everything else including the mounting bracket. Everything came in this box (I needed to buy extra mounting pieces). It was very easy to do and the is a QR code on the box with VERY helpful instructions. The only time I needed a helper was for attaching the unit to the ceiling.
Pros - Very quite. Easy to install. Excellent installation video.
Cons - It is unclear how much tension needs to be on the chain. I hope that I guess correctly.

FYI - to turn off the motion sensing "Lights on" feature, Genie said, "To turn this feature on or off, please unplug the opener and battery backup if you have it. Hold the down arrow and plug the opener back in while holding the button. The light will flash indicating it is on."

Chris: I bought this product to replace an existing garage door opener. This job ended up being much harder than I expected. But also, much easier than I thought after looking at the directions. I thought this would be just a plug and play experience. It was not. The troubles first came when I opened the box and started reading the directions. Having never installed a Garage door opener from scratch these directions looked daunting. However, after reading them several times, began to make sense. After the job, I feel that the directions were actually pretty good. The ad said to make sure that I do not have a taller than 7 ft door. I had a 7 ft tall door. So that should have been a direct replacement. It was not. The ad should have you measure the distance of the beam from the header above the door to the end of the beam. Because my original beam was longer than the new beam it placed my opener bracket in between studs. So, I had to fashion a board to span the studs and then mount the bracket on it.
