B. M.: The first one I received I read the instructions and could not get it to turn on and it had a battery. I asked for a replacement which arrived quickly and could not get it to turn on. I looked through the customer questions and found where there was a barely visible clear plastic tab which has to be removed from the battery for it to work. Someone needs to add that to the instructions for this product!

battery appeared dead at first so I found the seal that keeps the batt from decharging, & pulled it out. It reasd LO anyway. So, I read directions:

"Directions:
1. turn thermometer on by pressing on/off button
2. Screen will read L (low) and ˚C or ˚F will blink
3. Insert thermometer until it beeps or ˚C or ˚F stops blinking -(how far or how long?)
4. Read temperature (note: if thermometer has moved slightly, it may beep again showing a difference of a few tens of a degree, generally no more than 0.2˚) (Wha-???)
5. Turn off thermometer
(note: when starting again, thermometer will show last temperature taken"

I don't know. Call me stupid but those directions make no sense in oh-so-many ways. None of the things happened and I can't even get the battery cap off to change the battery to see if THAT will make a difference! I'll be returning it in the morning. (sigh).

Clyde Logan: It is easy to use and seems accurate. It is very large - almost a foot long - so it is a good thing the horse doesn't know what's coming. I wish that the business end was a bit more rounded. There is a taper at the end, so the rounded insertion end is smaller than I expected. It is not a point, nor is it sharp, but it is much slimmer than my old mercury filled horse thermometer with its bulb on the end. I bought this to add to a traveling equine emergency kit, but I think now I will keep this one for barn use, and take my old mercury thermometer on the road so I don't have to worry about battery life.

Don W.: I bought this as a livestock thermometer (rear entry for a horse) and it worked excellent! Significantly reduced the amount of time I needed to be behind the animal to take temps... and when you have an injured animal that has been on stall rest for some time, that's a big deal.
