Dana Wright: Red Sky over Hawaii: A Novel. A beautifully written story during the attack on Pearl Harbor. People were arrested and put in prison camps.

Joanna M: Thirty-something Lana, long estranged from her father Jack over something that happened in her teens, rushes back to his Hawaiian home when she gets news of his serious illness.

Unfortunately she's too late to see him - but not too late to take on his secret project, which swings into full effect as Pearl Harbor is attacked.

Quickly Lana finds herself pulled into a new life, one in which she is entrusted with caring for four other people. She has no idea how long this may be for - perhaps the entire war - but she knows her heart. She is definitely where the universe wants her to be.

The main reason I gave this book four stars is because the love story is somewhat contrived. Lana's ex is never full developed, just set up from the start as the "bad guy," while her new interest seems nearly perfect. Other than that, the motley array of characters is interesting and well-fleshed out, creating an interesting crew to interact with the mysterious volcano backdrop and the unpredictability of wartime.

AmazonCustomer: It ended too quickly, could have read for another hour at least. Thank you for such an endearing read, it explained to me the reason my father American born but a Canadian settler, joined the army in 1943.

Lorrel Palmer: I absolutely love all things Hawaii. Moloka'i by Alan Brennert is the #1 book I recommend to everyone who asks. So, I was super excited to read Red Sky Over Hawaii! This was a five star read for me--I absolutely LOVED it. Sara Ackerman was born and raised in Hawaii and it shows in her descriptive writing. Reading her book made me feel like I was really there--which was perfect, since my trip this year was canceled due to the pandemic. The book was set on the Big Island (my favorite!) mostly in the city of Volcano, in the days following the attack on Pearl Harbor. In addition to the vivid description of Hawaii, I also enjoyed learning about that time in history from the perspective of the outer islands--in the past I'd mainly through about Oahu during this time. I also liked that she added in real life people--like Thomas Jaggar, the volcanologist who founded the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

I loved all the characters, but I loved Coco the most. Coco was the youngest of the two girls Lana took in. What I loved about Coco was her love and compassion for animals, and her ability to understand them. I also related a lot to Lana. The story makes you think, feel, and reflect on...

Karren's Reading Nook: Lana Hitchcock receives a message from her estranged father Jack Spalding that he’s unwell and she leaves immediately to go and see him on the Big Island in Hawaii. But she’s too late he passes before she arrives, while trying to deal with the death of her father and the end of her marriage the next day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, her safety and the other civilians in Hawaii is unknown. Rumors are rife, no one really knows what’s happening is it a one off attack or are the Japanese going to land, take over the whole island and it be cut off from America? Lana decides to help two girls Marie and Coco whose German parents are taken in for questioning by the FBI and a Japanese friend of her father’s Mochi and his son Benji. Red Sky over Hawaii is about Lana’s actions and the decisions she makes after the Japanese attack the beautiful island paradise, due to the possible threat of invasion and helping four people. She decides to take them to a secret property her father owns and it's tucked away in the remote rain forest of Kilauea volcano. It's an emotional story about forgiveness, suspicion, self discovery, survival and love.
