Robert S.: I use 2-3 of these to start a fire in my wood stove plus a small piece of fire starter. Works every time. They will also rescue a smouldering fire. This box lasts me 3-4 winters.

Amy H.: I’ve never used fat sticks before. These are awesome! We put one or two in when starting it - only have to add another if things aren’t going well. They’re pretty small so I have taken a couple backpacking to help with the (legal) backwoods campfires. The smell is fresh and natural when sitting in the box - no smell when burning.

Stuart Wood: I like using fatwood and have always bought Plow & Hearth -- I have to say each package can be different not really consistent -- its (to me anyway) that there are times the fatwood sticks are not as potent as other orders (of the same product) -- so it take more sticks to get and keep a fire going to start with -- this could all be in my imagination but is my only real "complain" of the product -- that and the cost is pretty expensive.

Cornbread: First, I have done business with Plow and Hearth for years, several stove installations. Between our primary home, second home, and two shops we have 5 stoves and 3 fire places. Averaging 8 cords of wood. Aspen to Post Oak. I often re-split the wood as I buy it in racks. Easy for the lazy to hide big pieces in it. Three of the stoves, I made and have smaller than average openings to load wood. I have never thought the fat wood was too smoky. Since I re-split I collect the "splinters" and save by wood pile. Two pieces of fatwood with a handful of the other never fails. I use a propane torch to kick it off. My homemade stoves have burned for a week with the ash removal system I built in. Ash out, coals saved, wood added and good for 10-12 hours. One has a re-burn chamber and it is a wonder. I copied a Jotul design. It holds 32" inch wood. I also use a band saw to cut the fat wood down to 4" with zero problems. Building the fire is key to starting easy. All stoves are different. Make sure the air coming in blows on the kindling pile in many cases, it can be deflected over the top of pile, use your splinters to make a little platform. I have 7 kids and we make pack trips in the San...

Beagles Rule: I’ve been using these fire starters for several years now and there is no way in the world that it would take “30 sticks” as one reviewer wrote to start a fire unless you’re trying to light a pile of soaking wet wood! I now burn compressed wood blocks to heat my house and I can start a fire using only 4-6 sticks at most, I do use a propane torch with Map gas, it comes in a yellow cylinder instead of the green, the kind that plumbers use not the type with tanks and hoses. Those useless butane clicking lighters can barely make enough heat to start a ball of paper. The difference is I can start the stove using a few sticks not 30 and they will make more than enough heat to get a cold stove going as they burn very hot even though they are smoky while burning and they last plenty long enough to start a fire. Using 30 of these would cause an inferno unless they have them laid down flat and away from each other. Doing it this way they are NOT following the instructions about laying them crisscross each other and overlapping them. There is a HUGE difference between the two when trying to start a fire from scratch. In short they work great if you follow the instructions. There is a...
