10-Pound Box of Fatwood Firestarter for Easier Wood Burning

FPF: These work great. I have 5 fire places and a wood stove and I use them all the time. They are great. HOWEVER delivery did NOT follow instructions and they left the box on the ground in the rain. They are soaked.

Arnoldas: At the begining I was using 2-3 firewood sticks to start a fire. Later realised that It is an overkill. You can split each stick in to 4 or 5 small ( slightly larger than matchstick) pieces, use appropriate kindling with one split piece and fire 15 times more fires!
It works perfectly.

dospuercos: These have been great to use for getting a great fire started in our wood-burning stove. I was worried about buying other brands based on reviews. These may be more money but all the sticks are a good size & I usually only have to use one to get my fire going. I place one piece of medium wood sized wood on the bottom of the stove, place a firestarter stick on top, then prop a piece of dried bark over the firestick & then several small pieces of wood on top of the bark. I light the firestick & watch my fire while I leave the door open about an inch until the flames get going good, then I shut the door & 99% of the time have no problems starting a great fire in about 5-10 minutes.

TraxionTraxion: Pros- ordered a 10lb box and received alittle over that weight.
More than half the box was high grade fat wood,the rest was good quality also.
Average length is 8cm.

Cons-a few scrappy pieces in the box.

M. A. Lely: These firestarter are great and a super natural way to light a fire.

Some people comment about the 'chemical' smell, but that is not it at all. These are the oils from the fir tree and it is what burns so well. It acts like an oil and I personally love the smell.

They work a treat, I use 2-3 on BBQ, Wood burner and it always works well for me.

Kevin Boone: I thought I'd try this as an alternative to hexamine and similar chemical products, both for starting my wood-burning stove, and for outdoor fires. Fatwood is dry, resinous pine sticks, of about four inches length. The good thing is, it does work, and it doesn't smell nasty, as chemical firelighters often do. For about £20 you get a big box -- enough to start many fires, I would expect. However, it needs to be a big box because, compared to chemical firelighters, you need more of this stuff to get a fire going. I reckon about 3-6 sticks of fatwood is equivalent to one inch-square hexamine tablet, in fire-starting power.

The reason I'm a bit vague about this is that the fatwood sticks vary considerably -- the thickness is between that of a pencil and a 12-gauge shotgun cartridge. The thinner pieces burn less ferociously, but are easier to light.

I've found that fatwood sticks work best if they are laid at an angle -- if set flat on the ground or the grate, they don't generate much of a flame. In my wood-burning stove, I lay them over a thin log, so they point slightly upwards. Then, when the sticks are burning well, I put dry firewood on top. I find that I don't need...

Justhefacts: I got a ten pound box of it and just that will last a LONG time because you only use a little to initiate a fire. The pine resin saturated sticks have dried in the wood and aren't sticky, and they reminded me of some type of brownish/reddish plastic actually, with some even allowing light to glow through them. An odd thing, to be fascinated by a piece of wood like that lol. And speaking of plastic, although they smell nice like burning pine should, they actually burn like they were hunks of plastic as the smoke they put off while burning is black and creates a lot of soot. As the flame catches and the wood heats up, the pine sizzles, liquifies and bubbles on the wood, leading to a pretty intence flame once they really get going. As far as getting them lit goes, they're not volatile or anything like that and don't quite catch a flame like a candle wick, so it takes about ten seconds under a match or lighter to get them to catch, and then, there you go.. it starts slow and then really picks up.

My uses are restricted to keeping a stick or two in my camping bag, (the size of a single stick is like a bundle of four pencils) and as an alternative to lighter fluid to get some...

Buggle: So fatwood is made from the stump of pine trees, left to sit, pushing the resin into the stump, then it is split up into little pieces of "fatwood". It's all natural, if you care for that sort of thing and produces a strong flame. There is also a thick black smoke produced by the resin.
So at first when I got some fat wood I just threw a couple sticks and tried to light them. They lit, after about 3 minutes of continuous flame. "damn" I said and tossed them aside for use as a fair weather firestarter (no marketing could pull that off, even today) thinking they were kind of crap, unless used with another, more easily combustible firestarter. Then I saw another review on Amazon complain of the same thing and in the comments section someone said "take a knife and shave of a small pile of shavings". So I tried it, and it worked like a charm! Take one stick, take a knife and shave a small pile of shavings, gather them up and place the remaining piece of fatwood on the shavings (place another, complete stick on as well for a stronger flame) and the shavings will ignite in before the sulfur burns off of an eco friendly strike on box match.
