Carole Duff: A delightful cozy, set in the greater community in which my husband and I live. Engaging characters and a well-crafted mystery. On to the next in the series!

Calliegh: Bill O'Shea is under the impression that he will be able to enjoy his retirement. Moving to the beautiful mountain town of Wintergreen, O'Shea is ready to relax after a high power career of fighting crime. Finding that his new condo comes with a beautiful neighbor, makes the move even more engaging. However, when an elderly man out for a walk is struck and killed, Bill must join the police team to find the answers. With no real evidence or witnesses, can Bill wade through the "friends list" for a possible suspect? Who is the hiker that snuck into town? What secrets does he hold? Patrick Kelly does a wonderful job of character development. His description of the beautiful mountain views and terrain allows the reader to revel in the beauty. How can such a wonderful area harbor such sinister secrets? I look forward to the next story from Wintergreen.

Kathy: Kelly's newest series whisks us away to the Virginia mountains, the possibility of new love and murder. Bill O'Shea chose to retire in the comfortable hamlet of Wintergreen, ready to kick up his feet and enjoy the wonders of nature around him. But when an old man is hit by a car and killed on a mountain road, the town's small police department is faced with answering the question of who was driving that car and was this an accident or a murder? The acting chief of police knows he's in over his head, and turns to Bill, who'd put 35 years in the Columbia police department before retirement. Soon Bill finds himself embroiled in the investigation of what really happened to the victim.
Immediately things start smelling wrong. No one, including family, appears to be upset that the victim is dead. Everyone in the small town seems to have a secret. At the climax of the book, Bill finds himself in a gunfight on top of a mountain (if you can call it a gunfight if only the bad guy has a gun) and an answer that suits the surrounding jagged mountains and the peaceful Shenandoah valley below.
Wonderful characters are woven into a suspenseful whodunnit that will make you laugh and...

Gretchen L. Rix: Loved it.
Patrick Kelly’s novel The Mountain View Murder is a totally engaging beginning to a new mystery series set in the town of Wintergreen, Virginia. The Appalachian Trail is almost a skip and a jump (literally) from the condo retired police detective Bill O’Shea has bought, and he is looking forward to the peace and quiet and beauty of the area.
Of course, that isn’t what he gets. The police force in this little town is sparse, so when an important town citizen dies unexpectedly (hit and run), they shoehorn O’Shea into a consulting detective sort of role. And his retirement goes downhill from there. Or uphill, depending. There’s a woman involved.
Very good mystery, with an old fashioned romance blended in. The spectacular descriptions of the Appalachian mountains, and true to life engaging characters make this a book to come back to. I’m ready for the next in the series.
And very tempted to ask the author if his house is available to rent.
