Stefan Serju: This fits perfectly and is easy to install, the only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I need to replace it every year when the little plastic part inside snaps. It's not too expensive, and we definitely don't abuse it, so it's not too much of a pain, just a little annoying.

John Dos Santos: Got mine as a 'warehouse deal' - looks great!
Many of the negative reviews state that these break after a few months.
A couple reviewers have pointed out that often the cartridge needs to be replaced as it gets hard to turn after several years - I've noticed for a while that I need to use a good amount of force to turn on the tub.
I contacted Moen about this issue and they sent me a replacement cartridge as a 'courtesy' - I am not the original home owner, and the warranty is non-transferrable.
After installing the replacement cartridge and new knob, it is significantly easier to turn on the tub.
I don't expect this knob to break any time soon.

Alien Bitflipper: Our shower handle, or knob, cracked on the inside and then would not shut the water off without fiddling with it, which is the typical situation.

After reading reviews about this knob, it seemed wise to order a new cartridge at the same time. The people that mention this as a potential problem are correct.

Our decades-old cartridge had a lot of resistance when turning. That resistance puts too much stress on the plastic.

If your old shower valve doesn't turn effortlessly, like the volume control knob on an old car or home stereo, replace your shower valve in addition to this knob.

Some thoughts on Replacing the Cartridge

The new Positemp 1222 cartridge would not fit all the way into our shower valve. There is a clip that must be inserted to keep the valve in place. I used some lime remover on a rag wrapped around a screwdriver to really clean out the valve body until it was free of deposits. After that, the new valve just barely went in, and I was able to put the clip all the way in and then confirm that it was well seated top and bottom.

That 1222 valve was darned expensive -- $50 bucks! I had to buy it at the local store when I found out...

Michael Sanford: OK folks. Don't get mad at my review title. If you're buying this knob because the last one broke, you have a chance to learn something the hard way....like me!

I have a Moen Posi-temp valve in the shower of my guest room. The knob cracked and I was mad at Moen because they obviously don't make their plastic knob strong enough to last. Right? C'mon. You know you said the same thing. Just admit it.

Then I started thinking....and the smoke alarm went off in my office.

That valve was pretty difficult to turn. It had been that way for a while. I wonder why? So I did some research and learned about Moen Posi-temp valves and I realized the valve cartridge hadn't been lubricated or replaced in at least 15 years. Gee, I wonder if that's why the valve is so hard to turn? I wonder if that's why the knob broke?

So I sucked it up and bought a new valve cartridge to go with the new knob. Yes, they're a bit pricey if you buy the Moen brand cartridge. But there's a reason the valves work as long as they do. And replacing or lubricating the cartridge is really not that hard to do. Unless the cartridge is so old or crusted with mineral deposits. Then you might need a...

cause4concern: Edit: If you're like me and bought already 4 of these and they keep breaking, i'll save you some money. The cartridge in your faucet is probably too old to turn smoothly, hence the acrylic handle breaking after a few months over and over again. At a cost of 25 bucks per handle, it's much cheaper to just buy a new cartridge, which are currently selling for 65 bucks here on Amazon. Easy to replace and it turns so easily, you don't even have to buy a new handle. Just glue the old one back together and it will sustain the "turning resistance" of the new cartridge - there is virtually no resistance. The design is terrible. All the resistance of the turning is transferred to the tiny piece of plastic in the middle and after a couple of months the handle breaks. I've replaced it 5 times already and the price just went up from ~17 to almost 30 bucks, which is outrageous. It can't possibly cost more than 75 cents to manufacture this piece of plastic. It's probably cheaper to just replace the whole faucet that buying a $30 plastic handle every 6-8 months.
